Your Favorite Brown Ales

Is it true New Castle gets its color from food coloring?


Also- 'American Brown' ales kind of gross me out- i don't want aggressively hopped brown ales, maybe that's just me.

SS Nut Brown is King in my opinion.
Would love some other rec's though!

 

DFH Indian Brown is a definite go-to fridge brew, and if we're in the mood for a bit more kick, then their Palo Santo Marron is excellent. This year, however, we probably drank much, much more of Arbor's HopTown Brown, which was a "brown IPA" or sorts. Extremely hoppy and wonderful. Wish it was year round.

DFH Indian Brown and Palo Santo are the best American ones I have found so far. Bear Republic Pete's Tribute is also pretty good.

 

Dogfish Head's Indian Brown Ale is my favorite right now. I do like Samuel Smith's Nut Brown. Clown Shoe's Brown Angel is pretty good too. Newcastle seemed really flat last time I tried it.

 

Only style I do not care for

I don't drink this style a ton, but Sam Smith's Nut Brown and Woodstock Pig's Ear are probably my favorites and generally my go-to. Don't care for Newcastle at all.

I don't care for hoppy brown ales either, to me it kind of defeats the purpose. Not everything needs to taste like an IPA.

 

Civil Life American Brown Ale. It's really malty probably leaning toward a porter. Although it's very malty, and has a lot of mouth feel, it's surprisingly smooth. I could drink a few no problem.

 

I love brown ales of all sorts. Easy drinking goodness.

Brown's are one of my favorite styles and these are the ones pretty accessible to me.

 

Newcastle Brown Ale.

 

Foley Bros. Maple Brown

 

Moose Drool was my favorite beers for years and I still love Bell's Best Brown but the best Brown Ale I've ever had is Mammoth Double Nut Brown.

 

Palo Santo Marron is the only one I consistently re-purchase.

Oh, and the bourbon barrel version of Mother's Imperial Three Blind Mice is fantastic. But I wasn't sure if that's cheating since the bourbon barrel imparts a lot of flavors that make it pretty dissimilar to normal brown ales.
