You chose a nice one for your first. Try some of the French varieties of saisons and farmhouse ales for some variety. They are lighter than the Belgians (which I love) and are nice and subtle. Also try a Rockmill if you can get it from Lancaster Ohio. The Petit Saison is excellent.

    Cheers

As a fellow New Yorker I have to recommend Ommegang Hennepin. This beer recipe has to be at least 15 years old and still competes with the new stuff coming out. I started drinking it around 2000 and it was simply incredible then compared to the competition. Seek it out.

The G1 and NY3 are both really good. I also snagged the limited release H3. They have a few sours fermenting right now so very excited to give them a try.

So, I've been getting into this style quite a bit lately. For what ever reason its one of those styles that I overlooked for a long time. When I first got into Belgian beers (Germany was first and will hold a special place in my heart no matter what and it actually took a while for me to really get into and appreciate the American craft scene) I was really into strong dark ales and tripels, a lot of the Trappist brews, and eventually (quite a bit later) I discovered the beauty of beers like Duvel, Delerium Tremens and the brilliantly unique Orval but never Saisons. Anyways, fast forward a bit and here I am enjoying the hell out of some Tank 7 (we just not got Boulevard in AZ) and I can't get enough of this style in general.

So BA, what do you think of the style? Do you love it? Hate it? Why? What're your favorites?

    So far, mine would be:

    Boulevard-Tank 7
    Goose Island-Sofie
    Saison Dupont
    Great Divide-Colete
    Victory-Helios

I think I don't love saisons unless they're a little off kilter. I recognize that Tank 7, which tastes "classic" in my estimation is a fine beer. But I wouldn't drink it again. Just wasn't to my taste. Whereas Pretty Things Jack D'Or, which is highly non-traditional, was an absolute fave. As was the easy drinking Little Green Dry Hop Session Saison.
Almanac Saison Dolores was also great.

That said, I have a number of old world saisons in the cellar waiting for me, which I'm excited about.

Tank 7 and some of the Prairie Ales farm house ales are very nice, and Saison DuPont. Love a good saison!

    I love saisons.

    My Top 5 are:
    1. Crooked Stave Surrett
    2. Hill Farmstead Vera Mae
    3. de Garde Petit Azacca
    4 Tired Hands SaisonHands
    5. Fantome Saison d'Erezee Printemps

These five examples are all quite different as well. Love the variety within the style.

Prairie, de Garde, Hill Farmstead, Fantome, Jester King, Le Troue du Diable, Perennial, Side Project, Pipeworks, Boulevard, Allagash and Transmitter (local) all make excellent saison's.
