Caledonian was taken over along with Scottish And Newcastle, then dismembered by Carlsberg and Heineken.

Only have had American Scottish ales which are historically inaccurate, and incredibley delicious. Dirty Bastard, Backwoods Bastard, Tenacious Wee eagle rare aged, Nitro old chub, and a Homebrew that we aged in a dads hat rye whiskey barrel.

    Still ISO Ride the Lion.

Edit. I guess Jacobite was traditional? And delicious.

Tennents Special if you have to ask. Just love me a big ole imperial pint of it on draft. Belhaven 80/ would be a close second. While the Orkney Brewery beers are great I found the Highland Brewery in the Orkneys was just killer last time I was there!!!!!! Far superior.

When I was visiting Scotland many years ago my favorite beer was Caledonian 80 shilling on cask. I had that beer many times in many pubs and I enjoyed them all.

I have absolutely no idea how this beer tastes today.

    Cheers!

Several years back I thought Belhaven to be nectar of the gods, my favorite beer. maybe my palate changed, or perhaps the recipe changed when the brewery was bought out, but my new favorite Scottish is Innis & Gunn rum barrel.

Been getting an Old Engine Oil sour lately, can't find a listing on the site, but its a top tier sour.

Haven't had too many, but I do really like Skull Splitter. Have a few in the fridge now.

Love old engine oil-engineers reserve, but when I think Scotland I thing Lagavulin and Laphroig and my mouth waters with the smoky, peaty goodness

Harviestoun's line-up, plus Traquair House Ale, several of the Williams Brothers brews (Midnight Sun?), and I love keeping around Laphroaig for old memories and wet, foggy, Winter days.

Maclay 60/-, though I haven't had it in a while. Not tried the revived Younger's No. 3 or that would be in with a shout.

Since I've had so few Scottish beers I might as well list all of them and give my opinion:

Punk IPA- one of the better IPA's I've had.
5amSaint- One of the better Ambers I've had.
Alba Scots Pine- Really good stuff.
Old Engine Oil- Awesome the first few times I had it, not so great the last time. I must revisit.
    Skull Splitter- Decent.

Innis & Gunn Rum Cask- This I didn't care for. I was shocked to find it a tad watery.

Belhaven Scottish Ale- In my early 20s, well before I was into craft beer, I was drinking this regularly for a while because this gas station near me was selling it. This was a big step up for me at the time and I really liked this a lot. Once they stopped carrying it, I never had it again. Since I've been back into craft, I've wanted to try this again but haven't bothered. This I must seek out again.

Ohio is not exactly from Scotland, but Thirsty Dog pretty much did it for me with WULVER. Nonetheless, Paradox Jura, Dogma, Traquair House, Belhaven, Harviestoun, etc....all very good

Haven't had too may from what I can recall, but off the top of my head Brew Dogs Punk IPA was pretty tasty and for the price of a 22oz bomber, I couldn't beat it for $6.99.

Old Engine Oil would probably top my list, but the various Ola Dubhs are nice as well.

Orkney Dark Island and Belhaven Wee Heavy are my two favorites that constantly rotate through my fridge. Chelsea1905 is correct though I truly wish Belhaven would get off the clear glass bottle format even though out of at least 50+ bottles I have only tasted one that I would consider below par due to being light struck.

I've only had 4 truly made in Scotland brews:

    Traquair House
    Belhaven Wee Heavy
    Belhaven Scottish Draught (nitro can)
Innis & Gunn rum barrel Wee Heavy (sample)

Looking forward to trying some of the others mentioned above.
