Salute for your Grandfather and to your family. You remember him well. Whatever he drank was okay with me. He was a man among men. USAF 1968-72

My grandfather introduced me to beer. He loved it, later years he mainly drank wiedemann's. I remember him having the white can that just read BEER as well. He liked to drink his beer warm. Some say because he was stationed on an Isle in the pacific during WW2, and they had no refrigeration. So he grew accustomed to it, others say because he was cheap and he knew no one would ask him for a beer. I think it was the first story because when his good friends came by, he would splurge for the better brands. Maybe the friends bought the beer? Anyway I miss my old friend.

Neither of my grandparents drank beer often... My great grandfather on the other hand had a Miller with every dinner I ever saw him eat until he was roughly 80. He may not have finished them, but they were there

Both of my grandfathers served in WWII, as I'm sure is common of people my age. Gpop (paternal) tells a funny story about being stationed in Pocattella, ID at an Army airbase. He had a lot of Olympia and something that he says "was so green you couldn't drink it." I still have no idea what he meant. Back in Chicago, I saw him drink Old Style. He also had casks in a locked closet under the stairs. I'd only see inside once in a while when he opened the door (I probably got two glimpses, ever). He told me the boogie man lived in there.

The other grandfather passed when I was very young. At one point, I had two "Polaroids" of him. They were very old and obviously taken one right after the other. He was in a tavern, my mother couldn't tell which -Shaky Jakes? In one Polaroid, you could see the other sitting on the bar. My uncle claims it was one of the first Polaroids ever, and they weren't common til years later.

I asked my mom to hang onto the pictures... she claims I never did any such thing. :slight_frown:

His wife, a dear sweet lady, drank Busch in a can and chain smoked, but my mother and I disagree on the which cigarettes they were. Pall Mall?

My grandpa drank Old Milwaukee tall boys before his heart attack. My pappap (other side of family) drank Coors Light with salt. The beer was actually irrelevant for my pappap as he just needed a light beer to pour salt in; he learned to do it during the war and could never go back to just plain beer. My grandpa, also a WW2 vet, just liked Old Milwaukee pounders b/c they were (still are) cheap. My great uncle never touched beer b/c he could always get his hands on a good 7 and 7 (7Up not actually necessary).

My recollection from my childhood, when he came to visit us for a week or two each winter, was that grandpa drank the cheapest can he could get his hands on. I remember specifically, at one point, a six pack of generic "Beer" from Ralph's being in the frig. I have a visual memory of the colors of a Coors can once or twice. Pretty standard BMC and the lower grade copies of same.

My paternal grandfather was a hard-working farmer. Every couple hours of labor, he'd come in and grab a can of Old Milwaukee, pop the top and chug about half of it in one swallow. Then he'd put it back in the fridge and head back out to the farm-yard. He and his brother used to save all the cans and me and my brother would spend time smashing them flat and putting them in big plastic bags. about twice a year, the scrap man would come to our town and we could take the aluminum scrap to cash in by weight. But I remember smashing plenty of Olympia, PBR, Budweiser, Milwaukee's Best, and a few others as well. He spent the last hour of the evenings sipping a light whiskey mixer of some sort.

My grandfather passed away in the 60's but from what my mother told me , he never drank not even the toast at his wedding. ( I feel bad for him , they raised 13 kids without alcohol , no wonder he died so young )

Just talked to my dad about the GFs. Mom's dad didn't drink at all to his knowledge, whereas his own father mostly drank gin, with the exception of an occasional Gennie Ale.
