We’ve all had those stretches – I’m in one right now, actually – where work is stressful, life is hurling bad fortune your way, and after a long week you just want to mellow the hell out. For this occasion, what’s your go-to beer under the following criteria: 1). A beer you just crack and drink without any analysis of it; a beer that’s readily available and affordable; and a beer that, let’s be honest, is high enough in gravity to take away that pinch between your eyes.

For me: 21st Amendment’s Toaster Pastry. Yes, when this beer first hit shelves, I really dialed it in, analyzed it, etc. But after having it a few times, it’s now become a great ‘Friday night I just want a delicious beer’ choice. Plus, the 19 ounce can doesn’t hurt either…

I just want a German pilsner. No dry hopped extra hoppy newfangled anything. Ein pils bitte!

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is always cheap and flavorful.

Half Acre's Pony Pils, which I can't get in my area quite yet, is an excellent German pils and would be right at home for you. My other nominees here were: SN's Pale Ale, Brooklyn's Dark Lager, Sprecher's Black Bavarian, Boulevard's Tank 7, and DFH's 60 Minute.

So a mindless, thoughtless beer to get buzzed / drunk on that tastes pretty good as well.

I'm sure most anything a person finds tasty that comes in a 16oz pounder can do the trick.

    Great question.

I'd have to go with Port City's Monumental IPA. It's crisp, hoppy in all the right places, and I live down the street from the brewery so I can always get it fresh.

Well, I wouldn't go that far - as craft drinkers, we always want something well-made, flavorful, and with some passion behind its creation. That being said, I do think it's a bit to naive to assume those into craft beer/cocktails/liquor, etc don't enjoy the mellowed, buzz-giving qualities these beverages provide. Point being, I think after a long week, searching out something that tastes great, is expertly made, and aides in relaxation is a good and noble cause.

    Modern Times' Fortunate Islands.

Pretty much my favorite beer for that reason. There's never a time when I don't feel like drinking one.

Lagunitas Czech Pills would also be on my list. A bit more fruit character than I prefer in my pilsners, but still a nice drinking beer and readily available relatively fresh, at least in my market.
