I was wondering, since we are all a bit different in what we like in a beer what everyone's preference for ABV is. To make it simple I am just going to say if your buying a beer to enjoy for the evening, not to get hammered on, do you tend to go for lower alcohol beers like the 2-4% range? or maybe the middle range 4-7.5%. Or the higher 7.5 and up?
This is based off a 6 pack type of purchase, regardless of style. Feel free to elaborate.

I think 5.5% to 6.5% is ideal for me. Weak enough to drink a 6-er but strong enough to feel it.

I picked the 4 to 7.5% option, but I have to say there's a big difference between the ends. That being said, I like my beers to be a round the 6 to 7% range. By the way, solid topic.

Thats what I chose. I like them at all levels, just easier to relax and have a few if I'm not getting hammered in two beers.

2 beers can get you hammered?!

Not literally. That would be pretty awful. But the point being that I would rather have a few more beers at a lower percent, than less at a higher percent (to an extent, and depending on the beer).

Got you now, I love cask bitters and milds from the UK. US beers I love IPA, DIPA, Stout , etc as that is what we do best.

I do agree with you on that. Love me an IPA DIPA or Stout.

Though I did recently have Hill Farmstead Edward on cask which was very nice:slight_smile:

It all depends on the situation. My ideal beer experience is drinking in company in a pub and there's not much point in going to the trouble getting there only to have one or two.I like to spend several hours there so I drink the beers specifically intended for this purpose, session ales.I've got to the point that though I can enjoy strong beers I find the more modest ones offer more overall. This is massively increased by careful ingredient selection by the brewers plus cask conditioning which lets a weaker beer fight above its strength.
If I'm restricted to drinking at home I'll perhaps have something a little stronger.I find that over about 8 or 9% ABV the flavours get in each others' way and the taste becomes muddled.Reducing the strength makes beer more accessible without sacrificing too much on the flavour front.

I'd go for the least amount possible. I like to enjoy the flavor and don't usually care about the buzz. Doesn't help that I get monster hangovers either. That said, I'm usually drinking something on the higher range, because they tend to be more flavorful. Love DIPAs all day, just can't put em down all day unfortunately.

If we are saying that there is a magic wand that can retain all the character and flavor without the alcohol content, I'd vote for 0%-2%. I enjoy beer far more when I'm at a bar than in my home and I hate having to monitor myself to drive or worrying about others or running into an ambitious cop bent on issuing a DWI. I just want to hang out with friends and enjoy amazing beers.

4 - 7.5 covers the range of almost all beers I regularly enjoy all night, but 10+ ABV describes the beers I wish I could enjoy all night.
