Maybe try making a poll about a broad style with more than two options as an answer?

    Citrusy for sure.

You're right; this poll was inherently flawed. I grossly underestimated people's need to have ten options instead of two. I mean, who can choose between only two options, right?!? How foolish of me. Lesson learned.

The reason that I chose two categories is that there has been a trend lately -- at least in California; so I probably should have limited this post to my region -- of IPAs being produced with the descriptors of either "citrus" or "dank." For example, when I want a citrus bomb, I go for Sculpin, Grapefruit Sculpin, Booming Rollers, Beachwood Citraholic, Noble Ale Works Citra Showers (you getting the Citra idea, here?). When I am in the mood for something that is not a citrus-forward IPA, I go for anything from Oskar Blues or Lagunitas (because they both openly admit that they brew their beers to be somewhat marijuana-ish in their aroma and flavor) or a Stone Enjoy By, which boasts all over the label about how "dank" it is. I figured that people have been picking up on this trend, but I guess not. All of the snarky comments on here are unwarranted; I'm asking for people to choose one of two dominant characteristics: "citrusy" (orange, grapefruit, lemon, bitter citrus rind, bright, refreshing, a little piney, etc.), or "dank" (weed, fresh-cut floral, also a little piney, sticky, musty, mild onion, earthy, standing in a forest after a rain storm, etc.). Is that so difficult to handle? Yes, those two flavors can overlap. Yes, you all have finely-tuned palates that can detect the subtle nuances in hop-forward beers. Yes, there are more than two flavor and aroma characteristics in a well-brewed IPA. I am going for contrast here; hence the two options. Every time I post on BA, it reminds me of why I took a break from this site for a few years.

Thank you for creating this thread. I think there was some good discussion here.

It seems that almost every thread has posts with a fair amount of negativity. Hopefully this 'dynamic' will not dissuade you from continuing to participate in BA thread discussion and creating new threads in the future.

    Cheers to you!!!!

Thank you. I apologize for getting riled up, but it's a little odd that a harmless poll gets met with a rather high level of condescension. I'll dial it back with a nice IPA tonight. Cheers.

Will it be a citrusy IPA or a dank IPA?

    Cheers!

The descriptor of “dank” equates to having a marijuana like quality to my mind.

I have yet to see a Hop flavor/aroma chart (what I refer to as being a spider chart) with one of the axes being labeled as “dank’ but I think that it will likely occur soon with the ‘newer’ IPAs being produced.

For those unfamiliar with a hop spider chart, an example is below. I suppose in this example spider chart that vegetal = dank?

    Cheers!

This whole thing is funny because you could make a similar chart to describe the variety of flavors/aromas in different cannabis strains as well.

Well, I am a non-smoker so I couldn't construct or relate to a marijuana spider chart. Due to my 'uneducated' palate all marijuana equates to the word "dank".

    Cheers!

So let me get this straight:
You're admitting your post wasn't well thought out but you're also upset that people inform you of this fact? You can call it snark if you want. I like to call it making a valid point. There are tons of variations in the style, under the American variety alone. It broadens further when you factor in the traditional English style.

Christ, spare me with this "not enough poll options, broad style" BS. Good for you for bringing English styles into this. My original post was perfectly well thought out. People on here choose to be assholes with the whole "Actually, citrus and pine notes are often found in the same IPAs and there are more than two hop profiles and I prefer both at the same time because I like to lift myself up and display my superior taste and vast knowledge of beer styles and your poll is flawed because you only allowed for two options and you didn't factor in English varieties… *As said a-hole pushes his glasses up.* Just answer the damn poll: Citrusy, or dank. Is that SO out of the realm of possibility; that you would be asked to choose from one of two characteristics that are somewhat different from each other?? Now go ahead and state that you don't even know what dank means.

Wow, someone has their Oprah pants on today. I suggest finding your local serial killers basement, and learn the real meaning of dank.

I just call 'em like I see 'em. I meet people like you and others on here at local beer events, and I sometimes leave wanting to punch myself in the dick for liking craft beer.
