It is actually possible to get an IPA which tastes of er, hops. Too many of them resemble grapefruit juice.

Sierra Nevada Celebration. I think it tastes like a liquid Christmas tree, but maybe I confuse pine with Douglas Fir ...

75/25 tropical to pine is pretty much optimal, IMO.

I kind of lean more towards piney IPAs knocking my socks off but I love it when a citrusy or tropical IPA takes me by surprise.

Well, some American hop varieties do taste/smell like grapefruit. But I agree, I'm all for using hops in all their variety to get a wide spectrum of IPA flavors and aromas. "Tropical vs. pine" is just not a realistic portrayal of the options available.

Voted tropical they make better session IPA's, the pine character sometimes can be to astringent.

I used to be all about the piney IPAs, but now it's mostly tropical with a few exceptions. There are plenty of IPAs with a mix as well. Alpine Nelson, The Pupil, Sculpin...

Nothings better than a ice-cold tropical, citrusy bomb. Drink those all day long.

Like both but they have to be well done. Most session brews smell tropical , but taste like shit. I'd vote for a well done Tropical over a well done Pine, by a slim margin.

Wow! Looking at the poll results, I am genuinely surprised that tropical won beat out piney with such a large margin.

Tropical. Grapefruit Sculpin is my best example
