I truly have no preference here. There are plenty of delicious and accessible IPAs with both flavor profiles. When I want an IPA I simply pick up whatever is freshest.

You're from RI. I expect you to say this. I love the beer, but it would carry more weight from an outsider.

They each have their own merit. All thirsts being equal. I think I drink a citrus flavored IPA down a lot quicker, While a hoppier tasting IPA a bit slower. Is this because the citrus is tastier? Or because I am slowing down to appreciate the more bitter hop flavor ? This requires more research...

    Condescend much...

In my opinion Captains Daughtter is one of the best IPAs I've had period.

It also happens to fit the flavor profiles that we are discussing in this post.

I don't think the I have regional bias on this subject. There are lots and lots of beers from RI that I don't like and I wouldn't say otherwise just because I'm from RI.

I also know that if I was traveling out of state the first thing I do is ask the locals what they like best. Because they know.

Definitely not the sweet tropical notes. I find that particular taste to be nauseating, personally. I prefer piney flavors.

Hmm. I actually can feel your pain with what you're exprssing. I think that's why there seems to be some sub categories branching out from what was one of the original styles. IE Brown Hoppy ales, Belgian style IpAs and of course American Style IPAs which I think many of the grapefruit, pine and tropical offshoots get bunched together. As someone that lives in the UK (absolutely no bias) I can see your frustration with this......probably mor of a well balanced with a nice traditional hop bite with a hop such as fuggles with a nice sweetish malt backbone. However having said that I do like me some new world style in your face tropical and or pine. And I love the original English style also. I guess I just like IPAs.

My tastes buds might not work the same haha because I've had many IPAs from different breweries, east coast, west coast, Midwest all over. I've never tasted tropical or fruit in hops ever. Always pine.
