IMO words/phrases like "perfection" or "5 out of 5" shouldn't just be thrown around when it comes to beer, or anything really. So, the question is, my fellow BAs, is there a beer that you would consider the ultimate example of that particular style and has no detectable flaws? Doesn't even necessarily have to be your favorite beer. Sometimes flaws are what make things great.

For me it would be Duvel, off the top of my head I can't think of a more well crafted beer.

I'm sure this has been a thread before but whatever

Pseudo Sue, Rochefort 10, and Sucaba jump out to me without too much thought.

That is some truth right there. Sitting here with a Duvel was what inspired me to start the thread

I haven't had the "perfect" beer yet. For me it would be something with good hop flavor AND good malt flavor. Smuttynose Durty and Dogfish Head 90 minute come close but I haven't found it yet. Maybe I should start homebrewing.

I believe that perfection is unattainable. That being said I'm not overly critical of a good beer. The closest to perfection I've had are Boulevard's Saison Brett & Chimay Blue. Boulevard, Ommegang, Victory, & Lagunitas make some great ones. Because I also appreciate local efforts, I really enjoy some Good People and Avondale beers out of B'ham, Ala.

Hofbrau Oktoberfest, Ice cold on a September day in a 1/2 litre mug. Slides down real nice.
I would agree with Duvel too. I love that stuff but I get absolutely hammered every time I drink it. Its ABV to smooth enough to session ratio is dangerous for me. Cheers!

To style: Aventinus. Defines a weizenbock, no questions asked, can't beat it per the style.

Perfect to me and my taste: DFH Raison D'etre, love that frigign beer.

I've yet to find the perfect beer. I hope that I never do, because then my beer quest would be over.

No such thing for me. Just like the quest for a "perfect woman". Even if you have her you'll want something else after a while.

So many great beers out there that's it's hard to name a perfect one.

I think my perfect beer would be a barrel aged stout, a milk sweet stout, or a belgian strong dark ale. Those styles are the closest to perfect I've had so far.

Beer is such a diverse beverage that it would be difficult to impossible to choose a single one that represents everything that is best about the entire range of possibilities. That said, if I had to pick only one beer to drink for the rest of my life, it would probably be Orval.

The Abyss is definitely top 5. Bourbon County and Big Bad Baptist too. I know it's KBS season but it's impossible to get ahold of when you live in MT. :slight_frown:

My favorite style is a bourbon barrel imperial stout, but I still enjoy balance too. That being said, KBS and BA Velvet Merkin are the two closest I've had to what I would consider perfect.
