Oh wow, I thought their production and distro was much larger than that actually. Maybe it just seems that way being on the east coast.

Yuengling's 2014 barrelage was 2.9 million - they topped Boston Beer Co. in the annual Brewers Association Top 50 Craft Brewers list for the #1 spot only because the B.A. refuses to count BBC's cider and FMB production as part of their total. According to Boston's own 2014 Annual Report they "...sold 4.1 million barrels of beer and cider in all 50 states and about 30 countries".

You mean except for Oktoberfest and Summer Wheat, right?

I hope to try this ASAP. I'm assuming it will be an entirely different brew from their lager, which I don't much care for. However, a hoppier version of Lord Chesterfield without the adjunct flavor? I could definitely get into a lot of those. 60 IBU is respectably hoppy, assuming thats mainly made up of mid- and late-hop additions. If I can procure a fresh case, this may replace Chetty in the fall/winter as my go-to cheap fridge beer. In any case, it can't be worse than all those session IPAs.

I can't get the video audio due to being at work. Do they state whether this beer is all-malt?

At 28 seconds, they say "pale malts" and "munich malts", but there appears to be a pile of corn grit in the back as well.

They don't say all-malt. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, a little adjunct to dry it out is fine as long as they don't overdo it. Dry-hopping with Citra and Cascade is a nice touch.

I'm assuming it would be more in line with say a Jack's Abbey or Otter Creek Citra Mantra......probably just not near as good.

I don't think I've had a single IPL I liked (edit: I've had plenty, I don't need your recommendations), but I'll try this once and try to keep an open mind.

Although part of my gripe about IPLs is that I honestly don't think IPL is a real style. It's a hop-forward pilsner... calling a beer an IPL is beer marketeers trying to add an "india" onto everything. I'm all for Yuengling branching out beyond their flagships and generally think they've done their seasonal beers well*, but I'd prefer they stick with classic styles instead of chasing the make-everything-india trend, because I think chasing these trends cheapens their overall brand. Note, that preeminent craft brewer Sierra Nevada has not made an "IPL" yet (Beer Camp collaboration aside); they have made several hoppy pilsners, but they name them according to their classic styles, because that's what they are!

    * - Particularly Yuengling Summer Wheat! It's way better than the vast majority of american craft wheat beers and they have had big success with this traditional style... Go figure!

Definitely going to be trying this. If it's decent and in that $10 12pk range I could see this being a go-to party rounder. Start with some Celebration and then switch to Yuengling IPL once the ol' taste buds are a little stupid.

Randy, I respectfully disagree with referring to this beer as hoppy pilsner since:
    • At 60 IBUs this is pushing the 'envelope' for what most folks consider for the Pilsner beer style
    • Pilsners are stereotypically hopped with hops like noble hops (or hops which 'mimic' noble hops); this beer is dry hopped with Citra hops which are very, very different from noble hops
While you personally may not like the term of IPL, this is indeed an appropriate way to describe this beer since it is essentially an IPA but brewed with lager yeast. Ergo: IPL.

    Just my opinion.

    Cheers!

Fair enough... although I will point out that all IPLs I've encountered use a mainly pilsner malt base, so the IBUs might be out of range and they use American instead of German hops, but are otherwise pilsners in my view. I guess I'd like to see an IPL made with something other than pilsner malt, because it never seems to balance the hops well enough for my tastes. I find it ironic people criticize session IPAs for being like hop water or tea, but don't say the same about IPLs... if you ask me it's like hop water with an extra shot of alcohol. :stuck_out_tongue:

Doesn't all this really put them more into the American Pale Lager catagory?

Does this have corn syrup in it too? Correct me if I'm wrong but regular lager does, and at one point it didn't. It certainly doesn't taste the way I remember it to, and I wish I did because it was one of my favorite beers for many years.

    Based on this, yes. https://www.yuengling.com/process/

Although they could always be leaving other items out.

They should just call it "Hoppy Lager"
They have reservations of entering into this kind of market. IPL isn't even a traditional style.
Wish I could try it but no Yuengling here in Maine.

There are some secondary sources that claim that Yuengling (also?) uses corn syrup in at least some of their beers:

The do say Munich malt as well in the video. But judging by the color of the finished beer, it can't be much.
