The last 2 cases of Zombie Dust i've bought (dated 4-28 and 6-11) have been OFF THE HOOK good. Cementing its place as a world class beer for me. Just because 5 dingbats from a local paper couldn't "identify it" doesn't mean its not good or is "over hyped". Do other beers taste better? Probably. Are other beers similar? You bet! Doesn't take away from the fact Zombie Dust is fantastic.

In news parlance this is called "dog bites man."

ZD fresh is one of the best beers i've ever had. Only issue with ZD is it fades incredibly fast (faster than any other hopped beer I've ever had). You must drink it shortly after the bottling date, otherwise it doesn't hold up to the same standard. I wonder how old their beer was, because I'd much rather have ZD than dirt wolf.

Interesting list of beers to compare to ZD. ZD is a great beer, and ranks among my favorite of all time. It is, however, not worth the trouble, because there are other APAs, IPAs, and DIPAs that I like almost as much and which are readily available. Why spend hours in a line or chasing at the stores when you can pick up a pack of Dirt Wolf at most local stores? If you love the chase, more power to you, but I'm buying beer to drink it.

I had a bottle of the 6-11 batch and it's very good. It's certainly "over-hyped" around here. Almost every time I'm in a bottle shop there are people coming in asking for Zombie Dust. Once they are told they don't have any, they always turn around and leave. You bring up craft beer to anyone around this town and all they want to talk about is ZD or Gumball Head. You can tell them about better beers made in the same style but they want the latest fad.

I agree. Once October gets here, I'd take Schlafly's Tasmanian IPA any day of the week over ZD.

If it were still called Cenotaph and sitting on the shelf at every store in town, very few would be interested in it.

I was going to respond to your response to me but this post makes so little sense I can only assume you posted it from the public library.

I believe he's insinuating that the massive hype train that's been following ZD for years was more or less non-existent on the occasions when ZD made it's rounds (on draft only) under the original name. And while I believe it would be a popular beer, somehow the huge hype began when the name change occurred.

yep. totally this. Although if it were bottled my guess is that in the current beer world we live in it would still fly out of stores. Mostly because it would say "Three Floyds" on it.

None of you are making any sense.

    BeerAdvocate's thoughts on Zombie Dust

    1. Its not that great.
    2. If it wasn't called Zombie Dust people wouldn't buy it.
    3. If it wasn't called Zombie Dust people would still buy it.
    4. Zombie Dust is one of our favorite beers.
    5. I wouldn't go out of my way to buy it.
    6. Filthy causal beer drinkers are always asking about it.
    7. Zombie Dust is over hyped which a thing I think about every time I drink it. As recently as June 11th.

I don't go out of my way to buy it. It's enjoyable but without question over hyped. When it was sold with a different name it didn't do as well as it does now...although I do believe that in todays beer market it would sell a lot better because of "three floyds" being on the bottle and people go crazy for anything they make. I hope that clarifies MY stance on it for you. Feel free to ask, though, if you find this confusing as well.

Cenotaph was draft only. Are there still kegs of it? Seems like it sold pretty well.

I'm not the biggest ZD fan in the world, but I've always thought one of its biggest draws was how balanced it is. The Citra hops aren't in your face, it's not overly bitter, malty, etc. I prefer my beers more "in-your-face," but I also almost unanimously prefer DIPAs to IPAs/APAs, so that's not entirely fair.

Also, just because all these beers have Citra in them, does not make them similar beers. If all these guys preferred Dirt Wolf, it's possible that they either prefer DIPAs as I do, or they like beers with more than just Citra in them (which a lot of the beers on the list happen to have). Either way, I'd say this is no big deal.

Personally, I'd be more interested in a blind tasting between ZD and a bunch of other single-hopped Citra beers like Citra Ninja, Beer Hates Astronauts, PsuedoSue, etc.

Its a good beer, a great beer infact. Is it my favorite APA? No. Do I activly seek it out? No. If I have a no hassle opportunity to buy it will I? you bet.

I agree the pannel instantly was discredited in my opinion when they used different styles.

I think blind tastings are a great idea & wish people/stores/etc would do more of them. Having people actually focus on the sensory elements of a beer and comparing these elements across beers in a blind fashion is quite refreshing. Unfortunately, this is counter to the general state of craft beer today where seemingly the brand, brewery, availability, bottle count, trade value, etc play a more prominent role than the actual beer. This last statement can be encapsulated by instances of people buying up cases of a limited release without even having tried the beer being sold.
