There are buses from Detroit for DLD? If so, I'd like to know where. I'm thinking you meant Chicago?

Yes, I was comparing the commute to jolly pumpkin for zwanzee from downtown Detroit to the commute to DLD from downtown Chicago

Uh... does "DURING" count as the actual event, or no?

Only if they're implying no beers will be poured during the event, in which case, I'll be very underwhelmed that they're hosting a beer fest without serving beers.

But having been born in Michigan, I wouldn't be shocked. It already feels weird that not a single other Michigan brewery was invited to Jolly Pumpkin's event. It's a little weird that they cost as much or more than every other Zwanze event in the US.

JP's zwanze day costs more than every other zwanze AND they don't guarantee pours of the signature beer? Is that true?

    Huh?

The topic you originally broached was bottle sharing, which I think most people typically take to mean individuals bringing their own bottles to open--i.e., separate from the business hosting the event serving beer. So no, I don't think they are implying that no beers will be served.

But the line that was cited for you from the event FAQ *did* address the concept of bottle sharing before, during, and after the event, which is what my response was intended to help clarify.

Honestly, it sounds like you're just here to complain. There are plenty of beer festivals that specifically feature Michigan breweries in the state every year. This is clearly a different type of event and where they are choosing to showcase some of the hottest breweries from around the country.

As far as price goes, JP is charging $100 for 20 pours (4 oz) and a Zwanze tasting glass. A quick internet search revealed what some other places are charging (in order of cost):

    • The Avenue Pub: no tickets - just line up at the pub morning of the event to get your name on a list for a pour of Zwanze. Assuming you pay as you go for anything you consume at this one.

    • Holy Grale: $15 the day of (first come, first serve) for a pour of Zwanze and a tasting glass.

    • Trillium: $15 for a pour of Zwanze and a glass, and a "behind the scenes" look at their barrelhouse.

    • Bagby: $60-70 for 4 pours (6 oz), one of which is Zwanze, and a tasting glass.

    • Side Project: $75 for a glass, 1 pour of Zwanze and unlimited "samples" from the breweries in attendance.

    • Schera's: $80 for 5 pours (6 oz), one of which is Zwanze, lunch and a tasting glass.

    • Beachwood: $80 for a (8 oz) pour of Zwanze, five (5 oz) pours of Cantillon beers plus a breakfast or lunch buffet.

    • Green Bench: $95 for a tasting glass, a Zwanze t-shirt, a to-go bottle (TBA) and unlimited pours of a TBA list of beers. I assume this also guarantees a pour of Zwanze, even though their page didn't specifically say so.
So, I guess you are correct that JP is the most expensive--at least out of the information I could find quickly. But you also get more beer at JP than anywhere not named Green Bench or Side Project. As far as I'm concerned, 20 drink tokens might as well be unlimited. It even sounds like last year they weren't particularly hardcore about collecting tokens anywhere except for the Cantillon table, so getting more than 20 pours is probably not a problem, for anyone who wants to just tie one on.

As I noted in my original post, I think the DD ticket is priced too high, but the event itself is entirely in line with what appears to be "fair" pricing for this event.

Yes, that's true, but if you are considering going, it sounds like no one got shut out of getting a Zwanze pour last year.

I agree...when you look at these options, JP looks very favorably in regards to price. 20 4 oz pour tokens to sample some amazing breweries that you may never or rarely see in MI again. While I would love to see a few Specation or Arclight sours on tap, I can't imagine anyone will leave disappointed. The tap list looks amazing.

A little off-topic, but I'm in vacation in Brussels and today at Cantillon they're selling Zwanze 2013 and 2014 for on-site consumption. 2014 was delicious!

Well that was an amazing festival! I encourage everyone NOT to go so that it can be ~50% sold out again. Cantillon available until close & very few breweries sold out of anything.
Also I put exactly 1 ticket into a bucket......20 pours? Nah it was unlimited

Great event today. Yes it was expensive, but I did not feel unfulfilled. While many Zwanze events are cheaper and/or also include food, this event did feel like it provided fair value. Much less of a shit show compared to Chicago and the Cantillon table poured Nath, St Lam, Viggy and others for a shockingly long time. Had my last pour of Vig at about 6:15.

A few breweries didn't seem to send all that much, especially Other Half. Good chance I'd come back in the future.

Good to link up with you today @Zaphog.

I agree. Had a great time with my friends and had my fill of great beers. The only brewery that ran out quickly of something I wanted was 3 Fonteinen. I felt spoiled after a while getting walk up pours of Cantillon. Strangely, the Zwanze beer was my least favorite of the day but still not bad. I think my 5 favorite beers of the event were
    • Lost Abby Veritas 019
    • SARA West Ashley
    • Jestetr King SPON
    • Black Project Peacemaker
    • Perennial Funky Wit Raspberry
The two IPAs from the Veil were pretty awesome as well. Even though it was ridiculously hot, great time all-around.

One question though, did they do an official toast and I missed it?

    No.

I saw someone by the Cantillon table in the corner at ~3:10 saying well I'm supposed to do a toast or something. He tried yelling to get people's attention & unsurprisingly that didn't work. After a couple of minutes he gave up trying

Which year? WLV is a mixed bag. 2016 sucked for the first 3 hours since they only had enough tent to cover the pouring stations and it rained during most of that time.

2013 kind of sucked too with it split between the pub across the street and both buildings not able to collectively hold all of the ticket holders. The back yard of WLV was an improvement, but it's planning seemed not well thought through consistently.

Considering you were taking about this year at Jolly Pumpkin it could reasonably be inferred that you were comparing what happened at both places this year and nothing from before.

I can't speak to 2013 as I wasn't there, but blaming them for weather in 2016 when you knew it was outside, you could read a weather forecast and you didn't bring an umbrella doesn't make a "shit show" in my opinion.
