The brown is quite evident once I decant, transfer to a Ball mug and cold crash. The brown on the bottom always seems to be there, even when I deliberately leave as much as I can of it behind for my next starter.

Any ideas as to what it is? I'm assuming its dead yeast..... Am I being to rough on with my starters? 1.030 doesnt seem too high.[IMG]

Break/trub. Each time you boil and chill the DME you will get hot break and cold break just like with a beer. The dark stuff on the bottom is that material. Only way to avoid it is to get a super hot and cold break, decant the starter wort to a new container, boil and chill again, repeat until clear, then pitch the yeast. Too much work for that and no ill effects if you add the break material to the beer. Just decant the spent starter liquid or beer, swirl up, and pitch.

Awesome, thanks! I'll step this up a couple more times but keep the trub when I pitch as you suggest. Much appreciated sir.
