An entire decade ago on July 6th, The Bier Stein opened its doors at 345 E. 11th Ave. here in Eugene. There were only 10 taps to begin with, and “only” several hundred bottles from which to choose. Owners Chip and Kristina didn’t expect to serve a lot of food out of the small open kitchen with just a couple panini presses and a hot plate. Well, timing was key. The craft beer scene exploded, and the friendly and knowledgeable team at the Stein made for the perfect outlet for new beer (an outlet for the Stein, an intake point for customers…).
For our celebration, we would like to offer up some beers that reflect where we were then and where we are now. Since we were the first place to serve Ninkasi’s Total Domination, Oakshire’s (then Willamette Brewing Company) Watershed IPA, and Hop Valley’s Alphadelic (then Alphaholic) IPA, we will be tapping kegs of those (note: not from those first batches) and charging our old school price of $3.50/pint (those pints are now half-liters, 16.9oz). How times have changed. In addition, we will tap two kegs that we carried over from our small, cramped cellar at the old location: 2012 Russian River Sanctification and 2012 Firestone Walker Double DBA. We’ll also throw on Blood Sugar Hops Magik, a new IPA Chip brewed with Patrick over at Hop Valley.
This year, we did a special collaboration brew with some of our staff at Agrarian Ales in Coburg. Chip wanted to brew a Belgian-style Golden Strong Ale called Decadence, so we did that and then some. Two batches of beer were brewed with slightly different specs; the first batch with over 20 lbs of Clary Sage honey, the other without honey but with grapefruit and orange peel and extra Centennial hops added at the end of the boil. Part of the first batch went into Rose barrels, the second into Ransom Old Tom Gin barrels. We’ll be serving a couple different blends of these beers, and maybe a firkin.
We hope you will come and raise a glass– both to us and yourselves for being a part of the wonderful beer community we share. Here’s to 10 more years!
