Can from the Ottawa LCBO for $2.55

Appearance - Clear yellow colour with a small size fizzy white coloured head. There is a high amount of carbonation showing and there isn't much lacing. The head lasted for around 3 minutes.

Smell - Corn, apples, grains, caramel, malts

Taste & Mouth - There is an above average amount of carbonation and I can taste corn, apples, and grains. There is also some malty caramel and a bit of a herbal flavour. It ends with a corn/apple/caramel aftertaste.

Overall – I can see how most craft fans will not like this one.. but it's actually not that bad. It does have a fair amount of adjunct flavour, but it's pretty refreshing. I'm also drinking it really cold on a hot day, so maybe that has something to do with it.

473 ml can served cold into a pint glass. Part of the hockley taster pack.

Appearance - bright golden colours with some bubbles and capped by a finger or spoof head. Ok retention, but not much lacing.

Smell - rather fruit for a blonde beer, decent fruity aroma, otherwise one dimension. Still pretty decent.

Taste - clean and a bit fruity, but otherwise a bit. Bland. Very minimal hop bitterness.

Mouthfeel - clean with decent carbonation, but not the liveliest feel.

Overall - a serviceable blonde, that won't wow too many, but a decent option as part of a tasters pack.

Clear, light straw yellow with a thin, off-white cap that disappeared fairly fast. Just a bit of faint haze. Very mild aroma overall, just a bit of sweetness and fruity, apple character. Bitterness was low, mild flavour of sweetness and fruit. Short, clean finish. Light bodied without feeling thin, moderate carbonation. Good balance, well made for a light beer.

473ml can.

This beer pours a clear, pale golden amber colour, with one very skinny finger of weakly foamy, mostly bubbly dirty white head, which leaves zero in terms of lace anywhere near the glass as it quickly wisps away.

It smells of rather fruity pale malt - apple, pear, a touch of caramelized toffee - almost cider-like, what with the basically absent hops. The taste is more of the same - a heady drupe fruitiness, some middling caramel maltiness, and a musty drying character that one might construe as being hop-borne.

The carbonation is pretty low-key, the body medium-light in weight, and average in its fruity smoothness. It finishes off-dry, the caramel malt losing a fair bit of steam, while the malty fruit esters exhibit no such problem.

I wasn't aware of the style nor the meaning of '100' in the name (no mention is made of either on the can in front of me now). Anyways, this does come across as a typical blonde ale - too sweet, too fruity, and not nearly endowed with enough hops. Lopsided, and weakly at that.

Paid the extra 50c to get this in a tasting 3-pack because what the hey.

Pale yellow with many bubbles and a wimpy head. Very faint caramel-apple-grape smell. Bland, inoffensive, and highly carbonated. Pleasant fruitiness though.

This brew is brewed in part with locally-sourced ingredients ("100" for the 100-mile-diet fad). As a quaffable lawnmower beer it's perfectly acceptable; it's not very interesting though, unless you are into the locavore thing.

473ml can poured into a pint glass. ABV 4.2%.

A - Poured a clear gold with a bubbly white head, head quickly reduced to a thin ring of bubbles, very active carbonation, zero lacing.

S - Light grains, hint of caramel, hint of fruitiness.

T - Very mild caramel sweet, pale malts, hint of something fruity (pears?), minimal hops in the finish.

M - Medium-heavy carbonation, carbonation significantly decreased as the drink progressed, medium-low body, crisp finish.

O - At 4.2% it's better than most macro light blonde beers but overall It's quite average.

Rats. Didn't look at the can that closely. Assumed 100 maybe meant some sort of celebratory thing. Not. 100 calories. Doom.

Artificial across the board. Short head that is almost instantly gone. No head, no cap, no film, no lace. Looks like apple juice.

Nose is juicy and full of caramel. Tastes the same - fruit and caramel.

This is not beer. You can save another 100 calories by drinking a glass of water. Give this a pass.

Tallboy can from the LCBO; packaged on May 30 2013. I don't think I've ever had a 'low cal' beer that I would consider worth purchasing again, but then again I'm probably not a member of the target demographic for the stuff. That being said, it's hotter than Hades outside today, so it's as good a time as any to try this new light ale - besides, I've never tried anything from Hockley that I would describe as 'bad'. Served well chilled.

Pours the standard golden-yellow colour, bright and clear, topped at first with nearly two fingers of frothy, foamy white head that gradually fizzles away over a period of minutes. A thin, soapy film is left in its wake at the surface, but no lacing is generated. The smell is nondescript and not terribly inspiring - a weak mixture of grainy malt and adjunct sweetness, with some appleskin notes. Not really offensive, but pretty bland.

The taste makes up for the questionable aroma - as expected, it's a pretty straightforward blonde ale. The malts are the focus here, with a good mixture of grainy pale malts and biscuity sweetness. The adjunct is noticeable, but not to the extent that it ruins the beer or makes it taste 'cheap' - in fact, the caramel-apple vibe I get from this is actually kind of interesting, at least by light ale standards. It finishes with a light, grassy note that doesn't linger on the palate long. Clean tasting to a tee. Light-bodied, but not as thin and watery as I generally expect sub-5.0% pale beers to be. Moderate carbonation that gives the brew a slick, smooth feeling going down - it could stand to be higher, but there's something to be said for the lack of a 'bloat factor'. Pretty refreshing, if not all that memorable.

Final Grade: 3.20, an acceptable C+. Hockley 100 is actually slightly better than I was expecting, but I came in with pretty low expectations. That's not a knock against the brewer at all - I enjoy Hockley's offerings and this one is no exception - but from a beer that (I am guessing?) has only 100 calories and 4.2% abv, one can only expect so much. Sort of reminds me of Flying Monkey's Antigravity - a light, serviceable ale that isn't going to be impressing any beer geeks, but is still plenty good enough to get the job done on a hot summer day. I could see myself getting this again, but I'd need to be in the mood for something completely pedestrian. If you're looking for a sessionable, low-cal patio beer to quaff this summer, Hockley 100 is worth a look.

Edit: It turns out the 100 has nothing to do with calories; the idea behind the beer is that it is brewed entirely with ingredients from within 100 miles of the brewery, including locally sourced spelt. I've had this beer a few times now, and even though it's definitely the weakest offering from Hockley, it's still a serviceable, basic light ale that tastes alright and goes back easy.
