Malted barley roasted at a high temperature provides a chocolate note to this medium-bodied black ale. Cluster and Willamette hops are used to create this traditional British ale.

06/21/05- Part of three samplers at the Firehouse Brewing Co, in Rapid City, SD.
Presentation- Part of a three try sampler. Poured into 4oz sampler glasses.
Appearance- Light black pour with a small creamy head and minute lacing.
Smell- Very dark and light nuttyness. Maybe a burnt almond scent.
Tatse- Good chocolate and malt flavor with a deep roasted flavor as well.
Mouthfeel- Moderate carbonation.
Drinkability- Not the best, but by no means worse than average. Decent drinking porter.

Written From Notes Compiled 6/04-8/04:
Deep black color with a moderate tan head, which the nitro makes nice and creamy. Dark chocolate flavor, strong hops presence. Pretty big beer, there's a lot going on in it's sticky-sweet black murkiness. One of Firehouse's best.

Wow! If you are a porter connoisseur, you are going to love this one! Firehouse says they roast malted barley at a high temperature and this produces a chocolate note to this medium-bodied brown ale. Northwest hops are introduced to arrive at the result: a traditional British ale. As Mitchster points out, this is a complex offering. I couldn't differentiate between "butterscotch, vanilla and almonds" but there were nut-like and rich aromas present. A delicate light head lasted long, and there was lacing. The bouquet is an interesting blend of chocolate and Scotch whiskey! Nice mouthfeel with a medium malty middle. There is a burnt flavor of burnt malt and oak. I found it chewy and just the right amount of thick, rather than watery. Delicate after finish of hops, clean dry finish.

Clear, nearly black with mahogany accents, forming a thin, light tan head with good retention and lacing. Aroma is of sweet chocolate, cocoa, butterscotch, vanilla and almonds. Mouthfeel is bright with a woody finish and a medium-thin body. Slightly watery. Taste is burnt, with espresso, butterscotch, charcoal, and moderately intense earthen hops. Light in body, strong in flavor, with notes of charcoal and oak in the nutty, lightly dry finish.
