better than it looks, thats for sure. the only beer i had time for in this cool little rapid city brewery, but its a pretty solid one. it looked like mostly basic styles for these guys, so i went with the porter. very robust, slightly smoky, and pretty filling. a really good beer to drink with their white chili, which is bean heavy and starchy and even a little sweet, so this dry and bitter and big porter fit there nicely. it looks a little flat and murky in the glass, nothing special, not much head after the initial pour. it smells good though, burnt sugar up front and a smoky roasted back end. bitter there too. dark chocolate in the malt flavor, a little raisin or dried date or something a little fruity, and then the sturdy dark malts and roasted barley. good evolution and progression through this one, and overall a more solid beer than i was expecting after hearing some negative feedback from the local beer folks in town here about these guys. it could use a little more carbonation to keep it moving, but i liked it feeling a little heavier. also really nice with their molasses bread, i could fill up on that combo pretty happily. ill have to make it back in to try some other flavors, but i was pleased with this porter overall.
