this was listed as "specialty ale" on the sign, and i had to ask three staff members before i finally found out it was an imperial porter, which doesn't make a difference since i was going to try it anyway, but it would help if the staff were informed.
Appearance: pitch black with a creamy head that stayed throughout the session.
Smell: Malty, with strong chocolate and espresso overtones with a touch of hops.
Taste: roasted coffee hits you right off the bat, which fades into chocolate and then finally a sweet caramel maltiness reminiscent of dates takes over which then is overtaken by the hop finish and and an alcohol astringency which is not overpowering. a mild cocoa bitterness mingled with hops lingers on the back of the tongue and throat and urges you to take another sip.
Mouthfeel: nothing remarkable; definitely could have benefited from a more chewy profile to fit the style better.
Drinkability: very quaffable, perfect for cold contemplative nights. I would like to see this style offered again with more regularity, as it is much better than their old standby, the smokejumper stout. At 6.7% ABV, it certainly went towards warming the belly, which is just what you want on a cold winter night.
While it's certainly not a standout achievement for this style, the Firehouse needs to make more specialty beers like this.

On tap at the Firehouse Brewing Company in downtown Rapid City, SD. Listed as "specialty ale" on their board. Named "Imperial Porter".
A: Dark, almost black with a great khaki colored head which was small but nice looking. Surprisingly great lacing.
S: Syrupy, malty. Smell sweetness and a light hop aroma.
T: All the flavor hits right up front then falls. Sweet malt, small lingering bitter hop. Coffee and a bit of a port wine flavor. Raisins and unsweetened cocoa.
M: Thin. A little bit of syrupy-ness holds the palate keeping a small amount of hop bitter present.
D: Okay. Nothing offensive in this one but not really my favorite of this style or theis brewery. Easy to drink but not worth searching for.
