Served on-draught into a 4.5oz taster glass at Angel City last week. Part of an $8 flight of 5 tasters. Expectations were average. Reviewed from notes. Identified as a "Golden Lager" on their beer list: "Medium bodied golden Lager with hints of Ginger and Fennel." 5.0% ABV.
A: Pours a silky beige colour floater ring. No real head, but the ring's retention is good - not fully receding for a good 6 minutes. Not much froth. Decent thickness and creaminess. Nice lacing.
Body colour is a clear appealing yellow; translucent. Somewhat vibrant. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show. Standards fare for the style. I'm excited to try it.
Sm: Heavy fennel dominates. Some ginger and spice too. Anise. Pale clean malts. Pilsner malts. A bit grassy. No yeast or alcohol is detectable. Earthy seed-like notes. A biteen grainy, I suppose. A mild strength aroma. Somewhat fresh.
T: Ginger and fennel notes lie atop a simple clean barley foundation. Pilsner and pale malts fill out the body a bit. No real cream. The ginger and fennel aren't really for me, but luckily they're light enough to avoid offending. Quite simple. Decently balanced. It's alright. No real subtlety. I can see where others might enjoy this. No yeast or alcohol comes through.
Mf: Smooth and wet. Clean. Lightly crisp. Decent body and presence on the palate. Not oily, sharp, biting, or harsh. Decent, adequate carbonation. Suits the flavour profile okay; it doesn't oppose them but facilitates flavour delivery adequately.
Dr: Pretty forgettable, but I applaud the experimentation. I wouldn't get it again. Unrefreshing. Well priced.
