I'd never seen the double IPA before a recent trip to Red Car and am assuming it's a winter seasonal. Rather than the usual pint glass, it comes in what looks like a basic 10 ounce water glass. The abv is not listed and the waitress didn't know, but the serving size is the first tip that it's high octane. The color is a deep copper with a head that starts out thick but dissipates rather quickly. It has the same nice hoppy smell of the regular IPA, but it's just a bit overwhelmed by the alcohol smell. Unfortunately, the same holds true in the taste. The alcohol just seems to bury the malt and hop flavors. Letting it warm a bit didn't really seem to help. All the over the top alcohol smell and taste detracts substantially from the drinkability. All in all, it's a decent DIPA, but it doesn't quite live up to the superior "regular" IPA.
