Thanks to the RVA crew for hooking me up with a bottle of this some time ago in a surprise box of beer they sent me. Shared with friends alongside a botle of 2009 Vortex 2 and Chocolatized Vortex 2. Bomber poured into a teku, the brew appears a dark brown color with a thin mocha brown cap. Some ruby clarity is seen faintly around the edges.
The aroma includes a hint of mocha, molasses and vanilla sweetness imparting a similarity to something along the lines of brownie batter and bourbon. Some tangy raison, prune and fruits evolve as it warms up.
The taste includes plenty of bourbon tang with vanilla, chocolate, coffee and caramel. A nice whiskey kick with accenting raison fruitiness. The barrel is not dominating but it is noticeable and really works with the other flavors. The slight tang this has im not crazy about but I think it has somethin to do with the coffee they use since its also evident in non-barrel aged vortex 2.
This is a medium bodied brew with a modest amount of carbonation. A very nice integration of barrel, booze, coffee and base beer. Of all the pisgah beers I got to try? this one has awesome drinkability and id love to try it again. However, at a ~500 bottle count, I doubt ill see this one again anytime soon.

bottle 237/534. bomber into a snifter
pours a pitch black with no head. not a huge aroma..slight barrel, not much. taste is extremely smooth and the bourbon really smoothed this beer out. vanilla, lots of chocolate, tobacco..great flavors. full bodied, low carbonation
overall much better than regular vortex ll. very recommended if you can find a bottle.
