Reviewed @ the Redondo Beach Brewing Co in Redondo Beach, CA. Tappeed from the Clear Tapped Handle into a 16oz Hefeweizen glass for $6.

Aroma- A decent maltiness is somewhere in this aroma but mostly light and has no hop aromas... From having Amber/Red Ales lately, I was looking for a caramel character I've had before but alas to no avail.

Appearance- Received with NO HEAD once again... Light amber color body that is clear. Many of the characteristics with the Appearance have to do with the Head, Lacing, Retention, but if there is no head, its very tough to nail any of these...

Flavor- In the taste, there was some actual progress! Had a small amount of hop flavor but very watered down. Sweet malts were involved but then didn't have much of a finish. At least there were a few things here that made the style come to mind!

Mouthfeel- Light Bodied, Low Carbonation, and Watery. Nothing left on palate.

Overall Impression- Could I drink this during a long tennis match? I think so! Tough to even say it is an Red Ale but gave it a few higher marks here. Needs more Body, Ingredients, Malt, and Hops of course to make this style complete! Went down like water.

Poured on tap at the Redondo Beach Brewpub. The beer is a pale copper-red coloring, with no head. The beer has sour malt smells, with a slight hint of sweet caramel. The flavor is light, with sour and bitter flavors. The beer is malty, with slight citrus and syrup flavors, also. A sour finish, with the syrupy taste and feel lingering into the aftertaste. The beer has a very poor blended and watered down feel to it.

On tap while out to dinner at a friends birthday.

Poured a dark amber red color with almost no head.
Smelled a little like caramel, couldn't make out much more.
Taste was very sweet candy like caramel flavor with vanilla and not buch hops to balance. Very light body, probably too light for this one.

On draft at brewery, consumed 01/14/08.

Medium caramel color, crystal clear. Active carbonation but no real head.

Aroma is clean and a little fruity.

Mouthfeel is a little thicker than water.

Malty and a little sweet. No real hop character means a lingering malt aftertase. A little hoppiness would have cut through that really well.

Almost, but not quite.

I had this beer at the Redondo Beach Brewing Café located opposite the Delta Gate #61 in Terminal 6 at LAX. I had just got back from Pensacola and it was 7:55pm, I grabbed a beer in here as reward for flying Continental which had been a friggin’ nightmare. But if that wasn’t bad enough – at 8pm just after I had paid for the beer and sat down, they told me I had 10 minutes to drink up. Oh well.

Presentation: A Pint served in one of those tall thin ever so slightly curved sided Glasses. Called Rat Beach Red Ale, my colleague stopped for a beer here also, after the hassles we had with our two flights we both needed a beer. My colleague told me that the RAT stands for “Right At Torrance” – not sure if he is right but it sure sounds good.

Appearance: Deep red with one yeast ‘floatie’ in it at the bottom I noticed. Decent enough head that lasted for a short while but soon died away to reveal a thin scum covering. Average carbonation and served well-chilled.

Nose: Sweet malts with a funny odor, like a cross between butter and honey, not quite diacetyl, but not far off.

Taste: A malty red that tasted OK at first, but that off-putting, funny odor soon came back in the end of the beer, this time it most certainly was butterscotch. Though it was not a detraction to speak off, it definitely did not help the marks here. Sickly and cloying.

Mouthfeel: Pretty average, the large sweet malt bill helped the body, as did the smooth buttery feel on the tongue.

Drinkability: I managed the whole Pint in the 10 minutes I had, but it was a Red that is all too familiar, it’s a cookie-cutter Red that does not impress and is far too sweet in my opinion to be anything than average and a “One Pinter”.

Overall: OK, but like Continental Airlines, a beer that I will try and avoid again if at all possible.
