Laphroaig 10 year old casks, followed by 3 weeks in second fill Port casks - as used for finishing Laphroaig. This results in a beer that embraces Laphroaig’s legendary and highly appreciated eccentricities of flavour.

Absorbing all the deep flavours from the oak - spicy woodsmoke and peat, sea salt and burnt toffee - the beer adds its own rich, roasted flavour to create something as unforgettable as the island which inspired it. 30 IBU.

Copenhagen 13/2 2024. 33 cl bottle in a little cardboard box. From Meny, Borups Allé, Frb. F. Simple label giving the basic information about barrels and whiskies.

Pours clear dark copper with a small off-white head. Stable. Settles as thin patchy layer of foam unable of covering the surface of the beer. Moderate lacing.

Aroma is fairly intense with a sweet malty odor mingling with peat and light smoke. Light touch of whisky. Sweet toffee and caramel. Salami and whisky of the smoky variety.

Light carbonation. Thin, oily, greasy, almost flat texture.

Flavor is medium intense with a rather strong sweetness followed by a moderately strong bitterness. Aftertaste is sweetish with a salty undertone. Lingers for s while. Finish is peaty and salty.

Fine and pretty light barrel aged Scottish Ale.

330 mL bottle from a two-pack carton purchased at the LCBO; best before Feb 2026 and served barely chilled. Although the packaging is similar, this beer is distinct from last year's Laphroaig quarter cask release.

Pours a deep, clear brown hue with burgundy-red highlights, topped with one finger of soapy, cream-coloured head. Within a couple of minutes, this layer has been whittled down to a smooth, creamy cap and collar that produces a swath of lace with each sip or swirl of the glass. Inviting, complex aroma of malts, wood and whisky: I'm getting lots of leather, as well as peat smoke, charred wood, vanilla, treacle, dark fruits and walnut. I could sniff this all night.

Wow this is tasty - a little fruity at the forefront, with hints of ripe plum, date, vanilla and treacle soon giving way to peat for days. Smoke, leather, whisky, wood and earthiness come forward, finishing with toffee, sea salt and leather dissipating into a malty, spicy, faintly warming aftertaste. Medium in body, with low carbonation and a smooth mouthfeel; could use a little more body, but that's the only weak spot I can come up with.

Final Grade: 4.3, an A grade. Innis & Gunn have outdone themselves with this year's Islay Whisky Cask, which might be my favourite iteration to date. Heck, it's one of the best I&G brews I've ever had, period - which is saying a lot, because I've had nearly 50 different ones over the last 13 or so years. Keeping in mind that I don't drink scotch (or any spirits at all, really), this beer is so compelling that it's almost enough to make me want to give the world of scotch a real try, some day. If the wife asks, I'll simply claim to have developed a renewed interest in my Scottish heritage.

Purchased in Ontario. 2 bottle pack. Beautiful artwork on the box. Excellent taste profile on this bottling. Great deep peat flavor but light enough that the malt notes of the beer shines through. Slightly sweet with some hints of vanilla and light citrus.

LCBO purchase for about $6.50 CDN per bottle. Best before February 2026. Different casks than the Laphroaig Quarter Casks. These are 10 year casks. Served fairly cold into a snifter.

Appearance - Very dark mahogany in color with a small half finger of off-white head that fizzles out in a minute, leaving only a small collar of foam.

Smell - Rich with lots of wood, peat and smoke, a small sweet hint of vanilla, and elements of leather in the nose too,. Aromatics are on point.

Taste - Semi sweet with a touch of treacle and vanilla, then plenty of smoke and peat with a woody backbone. Slightly earthy leather in the aftertaste with some spicy characteristics singing harmoniously on the tongue.

Mouthfeel - Lightly carbonated with a medium bodied, some chew. Nice sensation from the wood sending a spicy note singing up the tongue.

Overall - My inclination towards a very peaty scotch is on full display here, but the flavors just capture everything nice with some sweet flavors and aromas, I&G's signature vanilla element as well as the great depth provided by the Laphroaig casks. Very tasty brew and well worth the high price of admission.
