White Dragon is an attractive gold color. It has a nice haze clouding the scene. Backlighting gives it a slightly orange look. Nice color. It’s topped with a white head that’s rather modest. It stands about half a finger tall and recedes to a surface covering quickly. Lacing was very light and spotty. Looks alright. Not bad at all.
This stuff smells excellent! It kicks off with a strong Belgian yeast scent. It has that classic Belgian yeast spiciness to it. Very impressive. It has a nice mix of earthy, grainy, and herbal notes that linger throughout. There is a bit of a floral scent. I suspect that’s the jasmine. Fruit notes of lemon and subtle apple and orange are noted. It smells very well rounded and features all the bells and whistles of the style. Alcohol is very light in the mix and goes unnoticed. I’m not sure what the exact abv is, but it can’t be that high.
The flavor is extremely impressive. Wow! Really good stuff. At its core, it’s a very well-done, spicy Saison. Belgian yeast comes through loud and clear in the mix. It imparts a strong dose of spicy esters. Tastes like a bit of clove, orange rind, perhaps some grains of paradise. It is very earthy, grainy, and herbal throughout. I couldn’t begin to identify all of the herbal notes, but there are many and they are delicious. It’s a diverse, but subtle herbal flavor. It is a bit floral. Given the jasmine, that’s no huge surprise. It is a little fruity and slightly sweet on the tail. Light lemon, and even lighter orange and apple are noted. Alcohol is buried. I’m not getting any. Finishes spicy, fruity, and a little herbal. Great stuff!
The body is medium. Carbonation is very light and soft. It’s very smooth and easy drinking. Despite seeming light and soft, it’s chock full of flavor. Very impressive.
White Dragon Jasmine Saison is great beer. This was the winning entry in Barley’s 2012 homebrewing contest. I haven’t tried any of the other entries, but I understand why this one won. It’s fantastic! Very flavorful Saison that’s very consistent with the style. I’m honestly shocked at how good it is. Richard Sheppard, I don’t know you, but I’m a fan of your beer. Please bring more to the masses! Well done! Bravo!
