Appearance- Received with about a finger's worth of head which has okay retention. The head is a light, creamy beige while the body is almost an opaque, dark chocolate black but shows a sliver of burgundy and ruby when held up to the light.
Nose- Starts off with definite chocolate which has a little bit of bittersweet quality. Some cocoa, roasted malts, and hints of coffee. Some hints of cherry and raisins that seem to be suggested by both the chocolate and the coffee.
Taste- Starts off with fairly deep and bitter chocolate and doesn't seem as complex as the nose. Pretty bitter both on the front and the end. Some woodiness, maybe a little bit of oak even. Some fruity notes around the edges (maybe cherry, maybe raisin) that tends toward a little bit of a metallic note. Rather basic especially when you consider it in the context of all the great beer I've had this week. Still, a pretty good beer and a solid stout. Nice balance and integration but definitely lacks in the complexity department.
Mouthfeel- Between medium and heavy bodied with an appropriate amount of carbonation. Slight grittiness/chalkiness on a somewhat dry finish. Fairly solid.
Drinkability- Pretty easygoing but could definitely more use notes on the palate to make it make more interesting. A bargain at 3 bucks for a 250 mL pour.
Overall- Pretty, solid beer that doesn't do much to distinguish itself during Bigger, Badder Week at Belmont Station. Still was nice to have a “lower” alcohol and cheaper option. Worth a try but not a beer that I would necessarily choose.
