A 750ml bottle with a BB of Nov 2014 (I think, it's a bit blurred). Picked up a while back from Trembling Madness in York. According to the Marble website, this is a Christmas version of their 'Stouter' Stout with a bottle of port added to every cask. Oh yes!
Poured into a tulip pint glass. Bottle conditioned. A dark reddish-brown hue that appears black in the glass. Produces a large head of creamy beige foam with good retention; this slowly reduces to a thick surface layer. Some lacing. Aroma of rich, fruity malt with hints of prunes, dried fruit, port/sherry, subtle roasted malt, mild molasses, a twinge of caramel and earthy yeast. Faintly vinous, with a slight whiff of booze in the background. Rather nice.
Tastes of fruity roasted malt with a lingering dry finish. Notes of roasted malt, mild coffee, a touch of burnt grain, dried fruit, subtle port/sherry, molasses, earthy yeast and faint stewed leaves. Well-attenuated, followed by a dry, malt-driven bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, tingly and dry, with spritzy carbonation and decent body. Could be a shade thicker for the style. Somewhat astringent, accompanied by an aftertaste of roasted malt, dried fruit, mild port and earthy yeast.
Pretty good - tasty stuff. Looks the part, while the aroma and flavour are replete with hints of roasted malt, dried fruit, port wine and earthy yeast. Slightly less depth to the flavour. Body is OK but could be a tad creamier. The port is delicate but makes itself felt, and the overall result is a satisfying balance. A solid brew; perhaps better suited to the cold months but there you are. Worth sampling if you have the chance.
