SESSION ALE #3 STILL KICKING:
So, like the Session Ales before it, this month's version - the Southern English Nut Brown Ale, has quickly reached celebrity status at Growler Hours, by becoming the most popular choice. If you haven't gotten out to the brewery for some, you'll find it at a few of the events listed above (like tonight's), and at a few select tap spots around town. Looking almost like a porter, this beer surprises with a light body, some chocolate roastiness, and a light sweetness that quickly fades. You may have heard me say this already, but this brew is a bit of a departure for me, with only ¾ of a pound of hops in a 7 barrel batch (as compared to Big Hop which used 10 pounds). Without all those extra hop additions, I found myself racking my brain the whole brew day, trying to figure out what I was forgetting. Apparently I was forgetting that this isn't a very hoppy beer.

I finally caught up with one of Scott's session ales, flowing at the Map Room. Appears a dark cola ruby brown hue with a nicely formed tan head to top it off...leaves behind bands of lacing with each sip. Aromatics contain evident roasty chocolate notes ruddy toasted nut with some nice vinous layers, also noted among all of this is an herbal hop character not bad at all. Taste...more chocolate roasts more raisin vinous notes coming at me semi sweet bitterness finishes with a bready nutty edge and has a very mild hop presence to it, very nice and smooth going down. Mouthfeel is light to medium in body evenly carbonated great even soft texture overall. Drinkability...just seek a growler of it definitely tasty and flavorful while remaining effortlessly drinkable, quality session brew Scott!!!

Had at the Brewery-Thanks Scott!
A: Dark brown with mahogany and red highlights. Large, slightly off white head and chunky lacing. A treat to look at - great color.
S: Sweet roasted nut flavors dominate the nose. Neither the sweet nor the roasted smells dominate-they are melded well together. Sweet malts in there too.
T: Follows the nose with roasted nut and sweet nut flavors. Sweet malt flavors throughout and slight vanilla sugar flavors. The smooth, sweet roasted nut flavors are the real winner, with almond flavors being the most noticeable nut flavor.
MF: Medium body that finishes smooth.
Overall: A surprisingly delicious brew. Not that I expected anything less, but I certainly did not expect a brew of this quality (especially at first stab). A really nice offering and one of the best EEBC brews I've had.

Another good one from East End.

Dark brown with ruby highlights and a moderate to large off white head, depending on the pour, with moderate to awesome head retention.

Smell is really inviting, sweet, but at the same time very warm and roasty with a perceptable nutty character like toasted/burnt almonds. Kind of reminds me of the smell of Prantl's burnt almond torte, which is my favorite food in Pittsburgh.

Taste is similar with a more enhanced dash of a smoky character, which is really nice, if unexpected. Caramel malt plays a big part, it seems, with earthy hops to balance, and more of that slightly nutty character. Really well balanced, solid beer.

Mouthfeel is great, moderate-bodied, sparkly carbonation that has just a little sting.

This is a really great, drinkable beer as the name would imply.

#3 in the East End Brewing Company's Session Ale series is a Southern style English Brown Ale

A - Pours a rich brown color with ruby highlights. Large frothy tan colored head. Minimal lacing.

S - Smell is phenolic, medicinal, with a hint of smoke.

T - Roasted malt, a bit of smoke, chocolate.

M - Medium with lively carbonation.

D - Another winner from EEBC, get it before its gone.
