SESSION ALE #4 can't make the same claim, but the hops aren't the truly unique thing about this beer. Most beers are brewed using 4, 5, or even 6 different types of malted grains, and a couple of different hop varieties, but not this one. I stripped down the recipe to it's simplest form: One Malt, One Hop, One Yeast, and of course water
(nothing new here for these last two, really). The resulting SINGLE MALT BEER puts it's distinct Munich Malt character in the front, with a complimenting American Simcoe hop flavor to support it, in what is probably the closest thing to a "lawnmower beer" that I've ever brewed...except this one has lots of flavor! Look for this one at Growler Hours in the next week or two.

Burnished copper body topped by an off-white head that fades to a small cluster of foam islands in the glass. Slightly hazy appearance as well. Nose is mostly pine with a hint of florals. The flavor has a rather assertive hop bite, much more lively than most session ales I've had. Typically I'm thinking malt, but the hops are in the forefront. The malt is present next, followed by a slightly acidic astringency that does a good job of cleansing the palate. Mouthfeel is decent, especially considering it's a single malt session beer. It's got to be tough to build body using one malt yet still have a session-type beer. Drinkability is excellent. Went down quick, and it matches up well with a hot dog with brown mustard.

This is my second favorite of the session ales behind the Southern Brown.

Brownish copper in color with a moderate fluffy, sandy off white head.

Smell is a definite Simcoe hop presence backed up with a dry grainy/bready presence with a nutty quality.

Taste is more of the same. Balance balance balance is what this beer is all about. Finishes very clean, but a piney, herbal hop character lingers for awhile and makes you want to go back for another sip.

Mouthfeel is pretty typical, and if anything is a little undercarbonated or slick.

One of the most drinkable beers I've had. This was really great after spending yesterday moving into a new apartment.

So will Single Malt beers now enjoy a cachet like their Scotch brethern?

A - Hazy light brown, iced tea color. Frothy white two-finger head.

S - Grassy hop with a slight phenol character.

T - Dry Munich Crystal malt lead into the Simcoe hops, showing their bitter piney side with a touch of bitter grapefruit.

M - Smooth, maybe a tad watery.

D - Probably the most sessionable of the 4 Session Ales so far. Plus the single malt grain really allows the flavors of the Simcoe to really shine without overpowering it with too much grainy sweetness.

Good job Scott!
