A bit less traditional, SOUTH OAKLAND is a killer aromatic hazy pale ale dosed with Tulsi. Tulsi is also known as holy basil and is a sacred herb used in Indian culture. We've played around with this herb a few times here at EEBC and thought it would work nicely in a hazy/juicy brew. We're tasting loads of blueberries, along with citrus, grassy, and juicy notes in this one.

Received as an extra in a trade. Canned on 10/7/19.

A - Poured into my Duvel tulip a rather odd hazy, slightly reddish purple golden hue with a one finger head that faded quickly to leave a thin halo and wispy blanket. The color is quite unique. I know this uses Tulsi (Holy Basil) so I wonder if they used the leaves, flowers, or a combo as I'm guessing the color could have come from the flowers.

S - Aromas of very herbaceous basil, thistle, green grass, almost berry like. The basil notes are to be expected but the aroma of it is both familiar and unique, certainly would not mistake it for Italian or Thai but it does have that herbal note. It's a head scratcher as I feel like it might drown out the hop notes but is still an impressive amount of basil.

T - Taste is...wow. Alright. So huge blueberry notes up front. Bright and fresh and just faintly seedy. Almost immediately afterwards comes wave after wave of grassy notes as well as tons of that herbal basil flavour. The finish has lingering orange marmalade flavour as well. That intense blueberry and super unique basil flavour is...well it's something. The finish does get a bit bitter as it warms and the herbal notes start to creep towards medicinal though.

M - Mouthfeel is the weakest element here. It's brightly carbonated with a thin body, coming across as almost soda or seltzer like.

O - Overall this one was an absolute shocker. I was expecting to utterly hate this 'gimmick' but wow...I thoroughly enjoyed this! The blueberry notes are just lovely and the Holy Basil is really, really well done. Never gets too herbal or overpowering. It was a real joy to try this. Now...could I drink more than one glass of this beer in a sitting? No, I don't believe so. Is this something I wouldn't mind having a few cans of in my fridge for when the mood struck? You bet. The only complaint is how really bad that mouthfeel was...and maybe the bitterness that creeps in.
