Summer Stout from East End Brewing. 16 fl oz can, picked up at Franklin Beer, Franklin, PA, 07/08/25, $ 4.00 (Including tax)/$ 0.25 per fl oz. Reviewed 13/08/25 (Review 3561). Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Undated can. In reefer at point of sale, stored at home at 40 degrees F. Served at 48.3 degrees F in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. The final temperature is 55.2 degrees F.
Appearance – 4.
First pour – Brown (SRM 20), slight haze.
Body – Black (SRM 40), opaque. Under direct light, same. When rear-lite, nearly opaque ruby.
Head – Large (Maximum 5.4 cm, aggressive center pour). Biscuit, medium density, slowly decaying to a 0.5 – 0.9 cm irregular crown and a complete, rocky cap. Chunks of the head remain on the glass as it contracts.
Lacing – Poor. What is there, are the drag marks that broke off as the head retracted, lonely misshapen islets of abandoned foam.
Aroma – 3 – Little nose but what there is hints at roasted barley rather than malted.
Flavor – 3 – Begins acrid with scorched malt. No alcohol (5.4 % ABV, according to the label). No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl. No gastric warming. Ends dry and acrid with burnt rubber overtones.
Palate – 4 – Medium: Watery but approaching creamy: Soft but lively carbonation.
Style: Generally, follows the style guidelines as condensed by BA.
Final impression and summation: 3.25 (After deducting 0.25 point for an undated can) Uncredited label artist. Sorry EEB, this just isn’t very good – the aroma and taste are nasty and the burnt rubber flavor tends to last - definitely a beer I may not finish.
