Redd's Brewing Co. "Redd's Wicked Black Cherry"
24 fl. oz. can coded "JUN0622 49 F106002071". Sampled on 06 February 2022.
$2.59 @ Javies Beverage, Philadelphia, PA

Notes via stream of consciousness: So this is the second Redd's "beer" that I've sampled. It says that it's an ale so it must be, right? It also says that it's brewed with natural flavors and caramel color. It's poured a crystal clear deep-amber - almost copper - colored body with golden highlights near the base of the glass. Whatever head initially formed disappeared so quickly that I have no idea what color it was. Its lack of head retention is an issue in my opinion, but whatever. It smells like apple, cherry syrup, and a little bit of alcohol. The flavor delivers more black cherry flavor, and although it's not as bright and strong as a can of Frank’s Black Cherry Wishniak soda it's still there. It's sweet, apple-like, and now washed down with black cherry candy as well. Nice!!! This is much more artificial tasting than the original Redd's Apple Ale that I tasted, but again, it's not too bad. It's not like that Jolly Rancher candy character that you get out of Four Loko Green Apple. Also, although I could smell a touch of alcohol in the aroma I'm not finding it in the flavor. There's a touch of acidity to it, but keep in mind all beer is acidic, and it finishes surprisingly drier than you might expect. The sweetness doesn't build, and I can't imagine that this could become cloying even if you drank several 24 oz. cans in a row. That would be way too much, but I don't think you end up with a sticky mouth. Perhaps the alcohol is helping out at 8%. In the mouth it's light to light-medium in body and gently crisp. So what to make of this? Or more importantly, how to score it? It's definitely not an "ale" with cherry flavoring added. It's an alcoholic drink with sugary apple and cherry flavor as it's only component. In a way I do like it, although it's too sweet for my tastes overall.

Pours gold. Has very little head and what there is fades quickly. Smells and tastes like artificial black cherries. Light to medium bodied. Tastes like a failed attempt at making soda pop. dud.

Drank from the 24oz can.

This is the second of this series I've had. This is readily available in most convenience stores and is actually quite alright for what it is. If you are in a beer wasteland and looking for something different from the typical array of malt liquors and light beers, this will do the trick. The black cherry version is better than the apple, and has a nice tartness to it that somehow isn't sugary. Hides the alcohol well. Can get a bit cloying after a bit, but hey what do you expect. A decent beer.

24 ounce can into tulip glass, best before 5/03/2021. Pours crystal clear deep golden/orange/aber color with a small foamy off head with poor retention, that reduces to nothing pretty quickly. No glass lacing, some clinging bubbles and streaming carbonation. Good appearance. Aromas and flavors of big juicy black cherries, fruit skin/pit, green apple, citrus, grain, white sugar syrup, and herbal/grassy earthiness. Touch of alcohol booze in the aromas as it warms, but not overwhelming. Light herbal/grassy bitterness and alcohol spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of juicy black cherries, fruit skin/pit, green apple, citrus, grain, white sugar syrup, and herbal/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Great robustness and balance of cherry, apple, and grain/sugar flavors; with a great malt/bitter/alcohol spiciness balance, and no cloying sweetness after the finish. Lightly increasing dryness from lingering bitterness and spicy alcohol. Fairly crisp/clean finishing. Medium-plus carbonation and body; with a very smooth and lightly creamy/syrupy/sticky mouthfeel that is fantastic. Fairly refreshing for the ABV. Mild increasing warmth of 8% after the finish. Overall this is a great flavored malt liquor. All around nice robustness and balance of cherry, apple, and grain/sugar flavors; dangerously smooth and easy to drink for the ABV with the mildly bitter/spicy alcohol finish. A very enjoyable offering without feeling too artificial. Tasted much like other malt beverages I've had, but much smoother for the ABV.

Poured from a can , a copper/amber apple juice color with virtually no head or lacing. Nose is all sweet cherry and taste pretty much follows - really on the sweet side. Alcohol is well hidden. Reminds me of wine coolers from the 70's and hanging out down by the river.

Pours a darker copper color with huge amounts of visible carbonation.
Smells like a cherry Icee drink.
Tastes like a melted cherry Icee.
Mouth is prickly with carbonation. Sticky with the sweetness. Finish is pretty tart and snappy.
Overall this is a nice drink to split a tall can amongst two folks. The only reason I would hesitate to drink a full one would be the sweetness. Nothing really offensive just a lot of sweet. I do believe I like this one better than the plain Wicked Apple. Just wows me on the memories of those cherry Icees I consumed in my younger years. Not bad overall.

24 Oz Can poured into a glass
Look - amber or gold with no foam head or lacing which is strange
Smell - Strong smell of cherry juice. Not getting much actual beer grains or anything else. Does smell sweet.
Taste - Woof, ugh this tastes like chemical cherry, the flavor is strong. I have no experience with Redd's not sure if they all taste like this...but i don't know who this would appeal to. Can't taste the alcohol is the good news, the bad news is it doesn't taste like beer. This is like a bad science experiment from a college student trying to make a fruity high carbonated beer.
I don't like it at all and so i have no choice but to give it a grade of a D
