Gianduja is the name given to a European style of chocolate made from milk chocolate and hazelnut paste. Pronunciation: zhahn-DOO-yuh. This unique rye beer starts with a delicately dark malty background that includes four different types of malted rye for an in depth layered rye backbone to start things off. Look for flavors of milk chocolate from the additions of lactose (milk sugar), coco nibs and hazelnut paste added to the brew. Overall undercurrents of dark fruit with bready, biscuit flavors that last from start to finish. To top things of we aged this fine Rye beer in Templeton Rye Whiskey Barrels.

Rye brown ale, brewed in April 2011, aged in Templeton Rye Whiskey barrels until it was bottled in September 2011.
Drank late September, 2012.
Original brew made with Giaduja chocolate, a European delicacy.
Very dark brown color, a touch ruby at the edges when held to the light.
Generous off-white head which dissipates but never disappears. Thick lacing throughout.
Mellow but strong whiskey nose; no beer notes come through.
Taste follows the nose; very whiskey based (yet surprisingly quaffable). Touch of chocolate on the back end, but sadly the brown ale is buried underneath the whiskey.
Interesting but not the smashing success I hoped for.

A - Served a rich dark brown-black color with a finger of tannish head. The head fades down slowly leaving some nice lacing behind.
S - Aroma is full of deep roasted chocolate malts and some milk sweetness. There is also some nuttiness, dark fruit, and some of the rye mixed in as well.
T - Starts off with deep roasted chocolate malt and some lactate sweetness. There is a touch of nuttiness and rye. Through the middle some more nutty flavors and dark fruit come through. The finish is a mix of roasted and sweet flavors that linger.
M - Medium-full bodied with moderate carbonation. The beer feels rich and smooth. The finish is a mix of a sweet and dry.
D - Very drinkable. Well balanced and a very interesting mix of flavors. The brown ale and stout mix was great, but could have used a bit more rye flavor.
