On-draught @ Braustelle.

A: Pours a gorgeous khaki colour head. Soft-looking, with a great creamy consistency, a good sheen, and pretty good retention (~3-4 minutes) considering the 12% ABV. Body is, of course, an opaque black.

Sm: Cream, dark malts, schwarz malts, buried roast. No coffee, vanilla bean, barrel notes, et al.

Aromatic intensity is average.

T&Mf: Creamy and full-bodied, with a lovely balanced flavour profile comprised of dark malts, chocolate malts, cream, milk chocolate, faint sugarcane, and silky schwarz malts. Smooth, wet, even a bit velvety, full-bodied, well carbonated, and we'll built, though there is room for further intricacy and subtlety. It's quite an enjoyable brew, but the very best expressions of this style venture into far more complex and nuanced territory.

O: A sipper by virtue of its ABV, not its taste, Black Out is quite an enjoyable brew - and amongst the very best beers I've had in this style from Germany. In terms of the global arena, though, it has a ways to go if it wants to entice discerning drinkers seeking out the best expressions of the style. At 3.80 euro per 200ml, I'm in no hurry to nab it again, but it's worth trying when in Koln.
