I didn't realize I was drinking a MOMA exclusive, but I suppose it makes sense given the pun of a name. Woo-hoo.
Anyway, I was excited to drink this after having Fleur de Lehigh down in Philadelphia a few weeks ago, and they're two pretty different takes on the ginger-saison concept.
This poured a dark gold with a short head and substantial lacing down the glass. The smell was pretty one-dimensionally ginger, and the taste was also much less complex than the Lehigh. There was some funk there, some spice, some caramel malt, and some ginger, but the ginger was not overpowering at all. The last taste in my mouth was much more caramelly than gingery--the ginger sort of came in in the middle. The mouthfeel was perfect for this beer--creamy with lovely carbonation--and that contributed to a high drinkability. I could easily have had a second beer, which I didn't feel after the Lehigh.
Would definitely drink again if at the Modern--it paired nicely with the food!--but I don't think I'd seek it out otherwise.
Well, I might, if it was bottled and decently priced and I wanted a drinkable saison. I thought the ginger was really well incorporated, I just wasn't personally super-excited about it.
