Sampled at the OBF in Portland the other day. This beer was a complete hot mess.
The beer pours a fairly dark amber, which is not what I usually encounter or expect with an IPA (even a TIPA, which is what this was listed as). The beer had fair head retention and decent lacing as well. On the nose, this just smells like a big beer. There is considerable sweet malt present, but also noticeable onion, dry citrus and light pine as well. The beer smells pretty boozy as well. On the palate, this beer is incredibly sweet and boozy. Yes, there's some noticeable tropical fruit and huge bitterness in the finish as well, but the sweetness really overpowers everything, and makes the beer pretty much undrinkable (at least to me). Mouthfeel is OK I guess, but the over the top sweetness and booziness make this a chore to drink. Drinkability is definitely not this beer's strong suit.
A couple of thoughts. Over the years I've tried a number of IPA's and DIPA's from Caldera, and it's obvious this just isn't their strong suit. Almost everything else they make I've been a fan of over the years, but making a decent IPA just doesn't seem to be something they can accomplish. So I guess it's no surprise that they crafted this latest abomination. Oh well...
