Another one of those imperial porters, so this was poured into a snifter.
The appearance was a thick dark black color with a finger's worth of a white foamy head that slid off at a moderate pace. Semi-filmy lace occurred and slid as the beer was sipped.
The aroma had a nice blend of maple sweet syrup to roasty nuts and a nice sly roasty coffee bean to milk chocolate malty underneath.
The flavor charged with the sweetness of the blend of the prior mentioned notes. Coffee beans sat further back. Aftertaste had the nuts and maple syrup.
The mouthfeel was medium to almost full bodied with a clever sort of sipping quality about it. Carbonation felt fine. ABV felt appropriate. Some "hotness" but I figured that was because this was fairly fresh.
Overall, pretty nice Imperial Porter that I wouldn't mind trying an aged bottle of this.

Poured a brown body with good head and lace. Smell is basically maple syrup with sugary sweetness. A thick, sticky, syrupy beer with a boozy hot finish with a sugary sweetness to it.

Poured from the bottle into a large snifter glass.

Light khaki to slight tan colored head, thick and rich at three fingers with a big thin foamy consistency. Dark reddish walnut brown body, quite opaque with very little light getting through.

Real maple inviting aroma. Hints of tree and sweet cinnamon bark like qualities, with maple sugar and a light candy crispness. Hot spiced cinnamon and even some sweet pepper and clove notes mix in, with a good sense of creamy vanilla to match. Sweetness is noticeable but also not outrageously huge either, making for a great experience on the nose.

Sweetness on the palate though is considerably stronger. A large amount of maple sugar notes through a very light porter sensing body. Hints a little wet, but manages porter character nicely. There's a toffee like crispness, and this is definitely no Aunt Jemima corn syrup creation either going on here. Sweet vanilla finish, and also some nice woody sap tones mixing in as well. Faint hinting roast just barely peaks out but the sugars dominate, but at least it's not a boozy mess and very well hidden.

This is a real nice brew, but it's really for maple syrup fans. It is good quality and nicely put together but it's also just a bit too sweet for me. However, I could see this as a great winter dessert brew and curl up in front of the fire place with easily.

Got this one from the LCBO in Kitchener last summer

From a 750 into a snifter
Vintage: 2015
Canadian Maple Porter
Collaboration with Breedon’s Maple Farm

APPEARANCE: Really light and transparent brown pour, almost red, yields a two finger, medium looking, creamy off-white head with very good retention. Head slowly fades to a full cap and clings to the sides of the glass. Transparent ruby red in color with very high levels of carbonation. Piles of carbonation. Extremely light in color for something labeled a porter; looks more like a red ale. A splotchy wisp remains leaving decent lacing down the glass as it empties.

SMELL: Maple syrup. Dark maple syrup. Lot of it. You could search around a bit and interpret something that resembles butterscotch and brown sugar, but that might just be another way of saying dark maple syrup. Huge and one dimensional.

TASTE: Lots of maple syrup again, which I guess is no surprise. Again, some ideas of butterscotch in there, and there is definitely a slight grassy character at the swallow. Bold and lingering finish with lots of sweet, dark maple syrup, butterscotch and toffee flavors, a touch of vanilla and some grassy flavors. There are faint hints of other things in this beer, but you could basically interpret this as a huge, one dimensional maple syrup bomb with booze.

PALATE: Medium body and higher levels of carbonation. Creamy on the palate, goes down fine and finishes quite sticky. Some heat lingers.

OVERALL: Definitely not a porter. How to breweries make these kinds of mistakes? You can easily calculate the color of a beer before brewing it, so do that and make sure a porter is what you’re brewing. Alternatively, if you want a porter but a red ale comes out, then call it a red ale. There’s nothing wrong with a maple red. Might be nice. Anyways, this is a Flying Monkeys’ adjunct beer though and through, which are always impossible to sore. It’s all adjunct all-the-time, leaving very little room for anything else. The slight grassy hop character from the red ale was appreciated, but this is basically just a one dimensional maple bomb. Not my thing, but it definitely might be yours.

The beer pours clear and dark brown. Almost Cola-like with a two finger high, fluffy, beige head that leaves a lot of lacing.

Nose: Chocolate, coffee, maple syrup, molasses, roasted malt, hazelnuts, caramel, toffee, fudge and grass.
Taste: Sweet maple syrup. Cold brew coffee with a lot of sugar in it. Caramel. Burned sugar, brown sugar, molasses, vanilla, chocolate and dark bread.
Mouth: Medium body. Light carbonated. Sweet but complex with dry ending. A great bitterness of coffee beans and hops.

I’ve heard a lot of people that dislike this beer becaus the high sweetness of it. But...
I confess! I’m a sucker for sweet stouts/porter and of course this will cloud my judgement...
