I hadn't been to Roots in quite some time. (You might say I'd been unRooted.) But I'm glad I dropped in while this Americanized ESB was pouring.
Barley Jules has a breezy aroma of red fruits that handily suggests the glowing red body it arises from. The taste has good tang, a wooden hop element, a pervasive nuttiness, and no lingering aftertaste. It is gruff in the manner that earned the bitter its name, but smooth enough to demonstrate that American brewers are more interested in transforming Euro styles than replicating them.
Traditional in its absence of head. American in its over-cold serving temp.
