473 mL can purchased at Superstore, the first of four 'mystery IPAs' included in their Vol. 2 Mystery Pack. Oats & wheat are listed as ingredients in all four, so I'm anticipating a hazy quartet of beers. Dated Oct 1 2020 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a cloudy golden apricot colour, loaded with flocculent sediment that gradually settles at the bottom of the glass. Roughly one inch of frothy, soapy white head rises from the surface and then dissipates within the span of three or four minutes; it leaves behind a thin, filmy cap and collar, as well as a generous coat of smooth lacing. Looks fine, if you don't mind all the floaties, but the aroma is a bit muted: lemon, grassy hops, grapefruit pith and maybe a touch of stone fruit.
Not a bad little IPA - citrus is the word of the day here, with white grapefruit, lemon and citrus pithiness overlapping with a grainy, wheaty pale malt backbone. Finishes with some grassy, herbal, slightly resiny bitterness and more pithiness through the finish and into a spicy aftertaste with mild to moderate bitterness and a faint twang of acidity. Medium-light in body, with assertive carbonation that remains crisp and prickly well into the course of the glass; it's refreshing by IPA standards, but one was enough for me.
Final Grade: 3.74, a B grade. Mystery Beer A is a serviceable hazy IPA - only moderately bitter, and not particularly juicy, so the end result is that it just seems to be missing something. I don't think I'd take this over existing NB offerings such as Head Stock or Wicked Awesome, but it was nice to try and who knows, maybe it'll get my vote in the end. I wouldn't bet on it, though.
