Okay
From the German, meaning “March Beer” and dating back to fifteenth century Bavaria. The beer was brewed in late winter and then stored in caves packed with ice blocks cut from nearby ponds. The mouths of the caves were shaded by planting chestnut trees, ensuring the barrels a long, cool maturation through the warm months. These beers were the forerunners of the lagers we enjoy today (“lager” meaning “to store”).
Nickel Brook Märzenbier is brewed with a blend of six European malts, and German hops. Dark red in colour, with a rich, yet refined body balanced by hop dryness.

Slightly hazy red beer under a short ecru head that settles to a film and gives steady lace. Looks okay.
Slightly sour nose, flowery hops, mild malts and some woodiness. Also sour to taste (and metallic). More malty than not, woodiness quite pronounced.
Mouthfeel a little too sour and metallic to enjoy. Almost bites back at you.
Unremarkable. Better on tap I suspect.

Had this on tap at The Victory Cafe. Pours a dark orange colour with very thin white head. Almost no lacing on the glass. Smells of very mild floral hops with toasted malt. I get some type of off aroma too, almost metallic. Mild bitterness is present in the after-taste. Medium bodied mouthfeel. Easy enough to finish off my pint, but I likely won't be going back for seconds any time soon either.

On tap at the Victory.
Certainly ticks the box for its redness, and looks pretty damn good with its off-white head. Some decent lacing and retention keep it off to a good start. The aroma starts to let things down, though. Its overly sweet, fruity and one-dimensional. Sadly the same can be said of the flavour, which is overly sweet and only adds a modicum of toastiness to provide interest. Medium body with a light carbonation is okay.
Not a good marzen, or beer for that matter. Drinkable, but I'd advise people to look elsewhere.

I tried this beer on tap on November 13, 2009 at "Smokeless Joe's" in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The beer poured a translucent copper colour with a thin tan head. The aroma was sweet malt, grass, and some hops...all backed by a mellow fruit tone. The mouthfeel was medium bodied with medium carbonation. The flavour was sweet malt, some grass, some peary tones, and a nice bitter finish.

Beautiful orange-red semi filtered Marzen gives a 3 finger tawny cap that laces well.
Toasty grains and herbal-woody noble aroma.

Pours a clear reddish amber, nice and bright, thin off white head forms and quickly settles down to a thin ring around the glass, no real lacing.
Smell is alright, sweet and malty, some honey and biscuits, light floral, a little weak, a bit of toast, caramel, not much else.
Taste is similar, sweet up front, caramel, biscuit, very toasty, almost an acrid burnt flavour, light floral, clean malty finish, weird.
Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with medium carbonation. Overall an alright beer but the burnt toast character isn't so appealing.

S - Nose is not overwhelming at all. Sweet and malty with some caramel.
T - A sweet roasted malted barley with a hint of caramel. The hop profile is not apparent.
M - A light to medium body with a good amount of carbonation.
D - A very drinkable beer that seems well suited for a hot summer day, a cold winter day and everything in between.
Definitely my favourite Nickel Brook beer of the few I have tried.
