16 FL. OZ. can
Served in a snifter

This beer pours golden and hazy. It i stopped with a couple inches of creamy, off-white head that leaves decent lacing.

Tart lemon and ginger aroma. Hints of cranberry

Tastes just like it smells. Tart cranberry lemonade with ginger in the aftertaste.

Lighter bodied and effervescent. Slightly dry mouthfeel

First sip was bad. After I settled into this beer it got better. It was not too hateful. It was actually pretty good.

473 mL can from Superstore; dated Oct 1 2021 and served slightly chilled.

Pours foggy pale yellow with a faint pinkish-orange hue; it's crowned with two fingers of puffy, foamy white head that lingers for a little over five minutes. By that point, it has been reduced to a creamy collar of generous proportion encircling a filmy cap - oh, and a beautiful curtain of lace has been draped onto the glass. Its aroma resembles cranberry ginger ale, including notes of lactic sourness, lemony sourness and subtle cranberry, as well a decent note of ginger root; hints of floral hops and grapefruit.

It's flavours are reminiscent of the original ZAP!, though not quite as sharply sour. Tart lemon, grainy/wheaty pale malts, even the hints of tropical fruit and citrus are still there, joined by hints of sweetened cranberry juice at the forefront, and then some light ginger root spiciness on the back end. Suggestions of cranberry astringency in the aftertaste, which is lemony-sour with moderate lactic acidity and lingering hints of candied ginger. Medium in body, with average carbonation levels that lend a proper bite to this brew's mouthfeel, resulting in a crisp, fairly refreshing sour ale. Good drinkability.

Final Grade: 3.86, a B+. Like the original ZAP!, this Cranberry & Ginger variant is not much of an IPA, but it is a decent sour, and significantly better than the original IMO. Then again, I've always liked ginger ale - those seasonal cranberry-flavoured ones in particular - so there's undeniably some bias at play here. Bias aside, I still think the cranberry and ginger make this into a more complete and satisfying experience - the ginger in particular serves as a good foil for the lactic acidity, its spiciness helping to cut the sourness back somewhat. Worth a try if it sounds interesting to you, and maybe even if you disliked the original.

473ml can served cold into a tulip. LCBO purchase for around $3.75Cdn.

Appearance - salmon coloured brew with moderate haze, capped with two tight fingers of frothy white head that stays frothy in diminished size for most of the beer. Little swaths of lacing cling behind too.

Smell- honestly, ginger ale esque which I guess this actually is. Some hints of cranberry but the ginger is inviting an pervasive.

Taste- some ginger up front then tart cranberry with some earthy underlying notes and a strange heat. Have no idea how this qualifies as an IPA.

Mouthfeel- medium bodied, light carbonation with some perceived spiciness accounting to the ginger.

Overall- a tricky beer because this is nowhere close to an IPA, so I’m dinging in in taste for that, I try to be quite liberal with style guidelines, but this is too far. That being said ZAP! Cranberry Ginger is a pretty solid ginger beer, would recommend on its own merits however for those expecting an IPA you will be disappointed.
