The winner of our "Beer With No Name" contest is finally revealed as "Uncle Goose"! Notes of orange peel and woody pine balance with sweet malt and honeydew flavours. Bold citrus aroma, amber colour and dank hop bitterness make Uncle Goose a top-tier West Coast IPA.

Pours hazed orange with a compact, frothy cap. The aroma is of tangerine, cantaloupe and bready pale malts. The taste is of orange, lemon, pineapple, and more melon. The mouthfeel is full bodied with creamy, active carbonation. Medium bitterness and lingering citrusy hops in the long finish.
A fantastic IPA with lots of tangerine and orange character. Worth a try.

473 mL can from the LCBO; dated Aug 30 2023 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a lightly fogged golden-orange colour, capped with over an inch of fluffy, foamy white head that lasts for the better part of five minutes. By that point, it has been worn down to a soapy collar and lumpy cap, with a quarter-inch coat of sticky lace also stuck to the glass. I'm getting orange and grapefruit on the nose, as well as piney, earthy, resiny hops; there's also hints of honeydew melon and bready, wheaty malts.
A flavourful west coast IPA: the malt backbone is wheaty and bready, with a hint of caramelized sugars, but it's overshadowed by the hops. Fruity at the forefront, with suggestions of mango and cantaloupe giving way to citrusy flavours of orange and grapefruit pithiness. Piney, earthy and a little herbal on the back end, with a resiny finish followed by a bitter, mildly warming aftertaste with a hint of citrus juiciness. Medium in body, with average carbonation that adds some bite to this pale ale's smooth, satisfying mouthfeel.
Final Grade: 3.96, a B+. Nickel Brook's Uncle Goose is a pretty good IPA - I mean, it won their "Beer With No Name" competition for a reason - but I don't think I'd take this over their Headstock IPA. Of course, Headstock is a formidable beer to beat, as it has maintained a slot in my IPA rotation for no less than a decade. Goose's citrusy, piney flavours are still highly appealing: I'd buy this again, and would encourage other BAs to try this batch while it's still fairly fresh.

473 ml can served cold into a pint glass. LCBO purchase for $3.75 CDN. Canned AUgust 31, 2023.
Appearance - Hazy coppery auburn colored brew with honey brown highlights. Two fingers of dense fluffy off-white head. Excellent staying power.
Smell - Citrus with grapefruit and orange mostly but a grainy note and some passionfruit in there for added complexity. Intensity is pretty decent.
Taste - Grapefruit again with some pine in the aftertaste. There's a slightly wooden citrus flavor in the middle, sort of a passionfruit and mango combo. Bitterness is medium as far as IPA's go.
Mouthfeel - Medium-full bodied, moderate carbonation and maybe a bit more sticky than other IPA's. Drinks like a slightly stronger beer. Medium-dry finish.
Overall - Uncle Goose is a solid IPA, but not one I would take over the rest of the lineup being Headstock or Wicked Awesome. Worth a try and there is something interesting with the passionfruit mango combo, but the rest doesn't quite excel.
