Tallboy from the LCBO, included in Nickel Brook's Winter Mixed Pack. Dated Oct 5 2023 and served barely chilled.
Pours foggy and translucent, its light golden-hued body topped with approximately two fingers of smooth, foamy white head. It drops off over the next five minutes or so, leaving behind a respectable swath of lace as it is reduced to a frothy collar and filmy cap. I'm getting orange peel and juice on the nose, accented with hints of peach, pineapple and berries.
A serviceable hazy pale ale - slightly juicy and moderately bitter, but nothing noteworthy really jumps out. Starts mellow, with suggestions of mango and pineapple giving way to orange juice by mid-sip, then transitioning to more of an orange peel/pithiness later on. Some grassy, earthy bitterness ties up the back end, with orange peel, resin and muddled tropical fruits fading into the aftertaste. Medium in body, with moderately low carbonation that passively nudges against the palate; its mouthfeel is smooth and soft. Easy enough to toss back, but not worth writing home about.
Final Grade: 3.76, squeaking out a B+. I would say that Frosty Palms received a frosty reception from me, but that might be an exaggeration - let's go with "lukewarm". Truthfully, there is little about this brew that stands out - its aromas and flavours are both rather subdued for a full-strength IPA, and they are in no way novel. Don't get me wrong: it's an acceptable beer that adequately fills its role as sampler pack filler, but I don't think it's something I'd be interested in buying as a single. Especially not if there's a fresh flat of Headstock or Wicked Awesome on a nearby shelf.
