473 mL can from the LCBO, included in Nickel Brook's 2025 Mystery Pack. Dated Sep 30 2025 and served barely chilled.

Pours a deep, clear amber-bronze colour, sporting two fingers of lumpy, creamy, off white-tinted head. It withers within five minutes or so, draping a curtain of lace around the glass as it drops down to a tight collar surrounding a thin cap. Spicy rye and toasted grains on the nose, with hints of berries, citrus and earthy, woodsy hops.

This is a fine rye-PA. Grainy pale malts and a light caramelized sweetness come through early on, with hints of berries, citrus peel and pine developing mid-sip. Rye bread and candied grapefruit peel round out the back end, concluding with a spicy, earthy, resiny finish that lingers into a bitter, mildly citrus aftertaste. Medium in body, with moderately low carbonation that gently prickles the palate; feels smooth and satisfying on the tongue. Highly drinkable - I could pound these one after another all Friday night, because I love me some rye beers.

Final Grade: 4.08, an impressive A-. Ever since Cameron's discontinued their RPA, I have been seeking out a substitute, and I think Nickel Brook's Mystery Beer A might be the closest I've found yet. It's still a distinctive beer in its own right - that candied citrus peel note was the highlight for me - but in terms of scratching that same rye IPA itch, this is not only in the same ballpark, it's within tossing distance of home plate. Great stuff - there's still three more of these mystery IPAs to try, but given my strong bias towards rye beers, it seems that A is going to be the beer to beat.

473ml can served cold into a tulip. LCBO purchase and canned September 30, 2025. Contains rye. Listed as Canadian IPA.

Appearance - pours a murky and cloudy dark amber color bordering on a shade of rust. Two fingers of yellow-tinged white head is poured and the staying power is quite impressive.

Smell - Subdued earthy notes a hint of rye grain, but overall pretty non-descript.

Taste - Clean and earthy with a slight piney quality. Rye shows up big time in the second half and lots of earthy flavors with a hint of spice. Pretty bitter overall.

Mouthfeel - Medium-full bodied with a lovely natural carbonation and semi-dry finish. Interesting drying sensation in the cheeks.

Overall - Well hopped and bitter brew with good balance and some interesting characteristics. Wish there was more nose, but otherwise a solid and rather interesting offering from a mixed 4 pack.
