473 mL can from the LCBO, included in Nickel Brook's 2025 Mystery Pack. Dated Oct 2 2025 and served barely chilled.

Pours a bright, clear golden colour, topped with nearly two fingers of soapy white head that collapses over the next few minutes. A thick wall of lace clings to the perimeter of the glass, with a tight collar and frothy cap lingering on. Looks great, but the aroma doesn't give me much to work with - grainy pale malts, white bread and grassy hay, with hints of lemon and apple skins.

The flavours are OK, but for a so-called layered IPA it seems downright two-dimensional. Continuing that analogy, the first dimension would be the malts, which are grainy and almost pilsner-like, adding just a touch of bready sweetness to the profile. The second dimension would be the hops, which honestly aren't doing much for me - a little bit of a citrusy grapefruit peel & lemon rind note, leaning more grassy & herbal on the back end. Slightly bitter, with a fruity aftertaste that reminds me of Flintstones vitamins. Medium in body, with gentle carbonation and a smooth feel that lets this go down easy. A little boring, but shockingly drinkable at 6.5%.

Final Grade: 3.64, a B grade. I have reviewed plenty of IPAs in my day, but for the life of me I have no idea what a 'layered IPA' is. Google's AI bot mentions something to the effect of hops being added at multiple stages during the brewing process, which, if true, describes so many IPAs that it's virtually useless as a descriptor. Untappd has Mystery Beer D listed as a cold IPA, which sounds about right to me: I don't generally like cold IPAs all that much, and this is at least vaguely similar to several of the cold IPAs I've had in the past. It's also my least favourite beer in this mixed pack, by far - not to suggest that it's a poor beer; it's actually just a serviceable, forgettable one.

473 ml can served cold into a pint glass. LCBO purchase. Canned October 2, 2025. Lagered IPA.

Appearance - Rich golden color, some haziness and a finger of white head is poured. Attractive brew.

Smell - Subdued nose, hints of citrus with lemon zest being most prominent. General grassy and grainy undertones.

Taste - Grassy mostly, moderate bitterness, some creamy grass notes and then medium bitterness in some grain. Kind of an unusual combo. Weird sweetness at the end that is a bit fruity and a bit bubblegum.

Mouthfeel - Quite smooth with modest carbonation and fairly light body for a 6.5% ABV brew. Dry finish.

Overall - Cross between an IPA and and a Kolsch makes for an interesting if unspectacular beer. Probably my least favorite of the bunch, but still my no means a bad beer and a worth addition to a mixed mystery pack.
