Aged Gouda cheese is the first aromatic impression I get from the glass. The smoky saltiness is followed by some salient notes of oak, bacon, and a tiny bit of dried raisins and prunes. The bacon remains the most dominant and persistent out of all the olfactory elements involved.
The sensation on the palate is actually very true to the description provided by the good folks at De Molen in the exact order it's described; the tongue is first greeted by an odd saltiness, but before it has much time to reason with why such a flavor is present, bourbon-like charred oak and vanilla flavors wash over. Some peaty, smoky flavors then surface, well-supported by a sweet malt-like after taste like the kind you find from a strong English Barleywine. The finish is somewhat phenolic and yeasty like a high ABV saison. In summary, I'm surprised the words "Rogue Beer and Spirits" is nowhere to be found anywhere on this label.
Medium-bodied, negligent carbonation. Feels a bit viscous in the mouth (no legs on the glass, though) with a formidable booze burn forming inside the stomach. Something tells me this probably wasn't the best choice in terms of a night cap.

33cl bottle. Dark ruby pour with no head and visible sedimentation. Smells like peated whiskey, smoked malt, dried fruit. Bitter-sweet and smoky taste, with notes of red fruit, sherry, raspberry jam, bacon, salt, caramel and alcohol. Feint notes of bourbon, but I would have missed them, had I not known to look for them. Sticky finish with an alcohol hot and spicy aftertaste.

Served on-draught @ De Kaapse during their barleywine festival.
A: Head is 2cm at its height, but lasts a measly minute, leaving no lacing as it recedes.
Body is a dark copper of average vibrance. No yeast can be seen within.
Sm: Malt profile leans surprisingly pale for a barleywine. Caramalt, above average hop pungency (with a floral character), honey, sap, copper malt sweetness.
Aromatic intensity is average.
T: Heavy on spruce, sap, and even faint pine, with more of a hop presence than I'm used to encountering in European brewed expressions of this style (whether billed as American barleywine or otherwise). Caramalt, pale malt, maybe even CaraMunich. This has a brighter malt bend, and avoids "darker" barleywine flavours like toffee, marshmallow, treacle, dark fruit/stonefruit, and the like.
A bit simplistic, relatively speaking, for the barleywine style. I do like it for what it is, but the depth and intricacy of flavour one finds in the best barleywines just isn't here.
Mf: Smooth, wet, full-bodied, unrefreshing, heavy, thick, and overcarbonated. Not ideal for the style or this flavour profile, but generally suitable.
O: An unremarkable barleywine, especially coming from De Molen. I wouldn't go for another - especially at 5.50/half pint, but it's not a bad brew by any means. Definitely a sipper, and there's ample room for improvement.
High C (3.0) / AVERAGE

Gave this a second chance at Chinaski Lavapies in Madrid on May 8th, 2016.
Oddly herbal, with some obvious smoked malt character in there too. Spruce, evergreen, salt, pale malts. I find no sherry character or bourbon character at all.
Drinkable but complicated instead of complex. A muddled mess of a brew, but it has some interesting elements. I gave this a second chance hoping it's be better, but alas...
