A- This Winter Saison pours a beautiful orange/copper/golden color that is semi clouded through, due to suspended yeast....there are some chunky bits that flow out of the bottle upon pouring. The head is dense, but not overwhelmingly thick, but rather becomes a nice looking ring around my glass....it is a clean white color. Carbonation appears to be quite sparkling in appearance and the lacing is nice with frosty skies over the mountains forming quickly!

S- Heavy juniper berries immediately, followed by some swift alcohol, peppery spice, caramel malt sweetness, with mustard notes. I am also detecting dry grains, vegetal/herbal leafy garden greens, muted floral hints and an astringent finish that reminds me of gramma's garden. As time goes on, the mustard and peppery notes come to dominate the nostrils.

T- This is much different than I imagined.....it is Earthy/rustic.....celery, potato, carrot, spinich, bell pepper, dry mustard.....herbal/vegetable overall. Beyond this, I do sense some sweetening malts but there really isn't much more to it....perhaps a slightly grassy bitter finish that is clean and refreshing.

M/O- I like the feeling I get....as time goes on the Szechuan peppercorn bits start to numb and tingle the palate but it isn't spicy at all. Carbonation is smooth yet plentiful and body is light/medium. This is a uniquely good beer that I rate as highly drinkable and wouldn't mind trying this in the hot sun....not much I find about it that would be specific to Winter....on tap this could be very interesting....a meat and cheese platter would be awesome with this! Recommended!

A nice copper color and a decent head gives this beer a good start.
There are "floaty bits" sinking to the bottom. They turn out to be bits of chilies.
Not much aroma, although there is a hint of hops.
The taste is mostly bitter, rather than hoppy, and there's not much sugar getting through.
That is fine, though. The chili is un-noticeable. Until you get mid-glass, that is, and those floaty bits come into play.
By the end, the tip of my tongue was a bit numb.
This isn't "spicy" beer, and the numbness is hardly bothersome. Overall, an interesting and enjoyable beer.
Not worthy of the "saison" name, in my books, but whatever.

Day 11 of the 2016 Craft Beer Advent Calendar.

The wonderful white fluffy head was full and inviting much like the buckets of fresh snow we recently got here. Plenty of carbonation danced with some residue inside the copper ale.

Smells of spicy hops with a slight floral

Tastes of mild spicy crackers but the pepper flavour was not there as the smell seemed to indicate.

The carbonation looked like it might be overwhelming but didn't go down that way yet more crisp and silky than bite.

The presentation of the product is minimalist but it understates this tasty beer.

330ml bottle, day 11 of the 2016 Craft BeerAdvent calendar - same '-ish' brewing mentality, same crappy labels, as ever was. Brewed with Timut and Szechaun peppers, along with some mustard seed. Ho. Ho. Ho.

This beer pours a mostly clear, medium copper amber colour, with a teeming tower of puffy, rocky, and creamy off-white head, which leaves some chunky island group lace around the glass as it lazily sinks away.

It smells of moderately spicy green and yellow peppers, gritty and grainy pale malt, a lesser edgy wheatiness, dry mustard, Saison yeast, and some tame earthy, floral, and herbal green hop bitters. The taste is bready and doughy pale malt, wheat crackers, a muddled musty spiciness, green-ish mustard notes, a sedate Low Countries yeastiness, some mild indistinct citrus rind fruitiness, and more understated leafy, grassy, and floral verdant hoppiness.

The carbonation is obviously quite active in the glass, but less so on the palate, via its weak-sauce frothiness, the body a so-so middleweight, and more or less smooth, even the guest peppers not really caring to interfere here. It finishes trending dry, the wheaten malt and still underwhelming peppers (both spicy and spiced in nature) walking us out.

Overall, this appears to be yet another de Molen offering where the whole is much less than the sum of its parts - too many cooks spoiling the broth, and all that. Nothing feels cohesive here, and the peppers do very little to float my capsicum-loving boat. Meh.
