Wow. Unique beer. I've had plenty of flavored beers before but never one so unfettered in its ambitions. This is a CHERRY porter. Again in case you missed it: CHERRY.
It's a good beer. Looks great -- deep brownish with bits of red from the light shining through the beer. A great, tight head from the hand pump. Very attractive brew.
Cherry smell is beyond evident. If the cherries were a sledgehammer, you'd be outcold from being beaten over the head. And that's the only thing that detracts from this beer. It's, in the words of my fiancee, a lot like a cherry cordial. You have to sip it and nurse it. There's no slamming this guy. Not at all. Flavor is a tiny bit sour and a whole lot cherry. I liken it to someone taking a pretty bland porter and dumping 2 tablespoons of juice from the Marachino cherry jar into the beer. Little to no hop presence or roasted flavor. A very straightforward, powerfully-flavored beer.
Being medium- to full-bodied with such an intense cherry flavor makes this a bit hard to drink a lot of. And while I would definitely have this beer again (especially with something like a beef tenderloin with raspberry or cherry sauce), I wouldn't have more than one per sitting.
