A growler filled last Sunday, 19-Jun, at the brewpub. Just what I need, another saison from Bullfrog.

A: The growler was filled all the way to the lid, resulting no very little head escaping. Poured into a glass, the saison has an apple juice amber color, translucent with a finger of head that quickly disappeared. Sitting in my glass now, the color and lack of head is identical to that glass of apple juice.

S: The nose smells like familiar territory, spicy and estery, complex and musty. Star anise, fleshy apples and pepper all take turns at the front. Biscuity grains are also difficult to miss. The spices are abundant, standing out even when cold.

T: Flavorful, a combination of spiciness and mustiness, from the first sip. Fresh pears appear sporadically, a fruity base for the spices that follow. Anise is licoricey, stronger when the ale sits on my palate. Pepper and orange zest add a citrusy bite. Biscuit, along with cinnamon and apples, also makes an appearance. A medicinal, powdery finish appears mid-sip, throwing things off a bit. Luckily that flavor is generally masked by the spice profile. The finish, with sweeter citrus, anise and musty yeast, is worth every sip. Bullfrog's saison tradition is in good hands.

M: The mouthfeel is spicy, citrus and pepper, and musty, anise and yeast. Press me and I might say that there's a bit of wheat in there too. Pleasantly complex, even a little too strong at times. A wonderful saison.

O: Refreshing, spicy, formidable, all in one glass. A very good saison from Bullfrog. What else is new?
