i think this one is way underrated here. its rich and delicious, maybe a little under chocolated, but the flavors of the roasty malt and the lactose really gel well, and its a long flavored brew with a wide range of flavors from coffee to dark cocoa to even toasted coconut. it has a slick feel too, perhaps a touch too thin for the style, but it makes it more drinkable and really light in feel for how boldly flavored it is. i really cant see the criticism either, it has no visible flaws, although i agree with another reviewer that the carbonation may be a touch high for the style. i disagree that the flavors arent nice though, i think this must have evolved a little bite over time, as i found it to be quite unique and satisfying. chocolate doesnt always work in a porter, and i think the subtle use of it here is a nice accent. it picks up the chocolate malt above the roast real nicely. This is my first beer from these guys, and it is real solid, i look forward to more, whenever they may come.

08/12/06- Had on tap at The Railyard in Billings, MT.
Presentation- From the tap into a standard pint glass.
Appearance- Pitch black pour. 1/2 inch head, fairly creamy looking. Very nice patchy lace.
Smell- What smell? Very very light roasted malt nose and nothing else. Struggled to get just that.
Taste- A tiny bit sour upon first sip. A light watery, yet at the same time nonfat milky and smooth. No hops at all with a slight chocolate flavor. Seems a bit smoky as well. Think nonfat milk burned in a pot with a bit of nestle quick added. Not that impressive.
Mouthfeel- Watery and milky with an overcarbonated base.
Drinkability- So far I'm 0-2 with Neptune. Rather tasteless brew that is bland and boring.
